1. Gary Moore-Story of the Blues springs to mind for some reason. Loads of Freddie King stuff that generally gets missed. I'd try and keep away from the same old stuff just about everybody else does, and try to keep away from long long lead breaks, unless you have an exceptional guitard.
2. I put a Wilkinson P J setup on my passive Bass Collection 301, much better than the original ones, the P sounds nice, still lacks the oomph I want. But for around £30 the pair its aint bad. I put a Kent Armstrong 10K vintage on my Precision bitsa, and its got loads of oomph and a lovely growl to it. Cost around £30 new via ebay. Hope that helps.
3. If you increase the value of the pot and use the larger value cap, that should increase the range. Just fitting a larger cap might mean you lose some high frequencies even with the pot backed right off.
4. Saw Dr Hook at Barbarellas, back in the Medicine Show days - when they were a good band - Dennis wotsisname walked off for a piss mid set and left the rest of em to it. Not sure if it was part of the act, but we nicked it and made it part of ours with the band was with at the time.
5. I used a non VS very early (1974) 2 channel one, which I swapped for a Really unreliable Marshall SL100 in 1976 or 77. its never failed, and doesnt get very hot. In that time its been used with a 4x12, a 4X12 & 1X18 stack, and later sat on top of two HH 1x15 PA cabs, which sounded great. I still have it, and occasionally use it with an ancient Fender 2X15. I love it, although it dont really look the part. And wouldnt dream of parting with it. HH used a lot of different output PCBs, and I do know other people have had reliability issues, so maybe I got lucky.

7. Thought of covering covers, Slightly different or updated or improved versions. try youtube ing these for example. Contraband-All the way from memphis. David le Roth-Really got me, or Tobacco Rd, etc. Why does nobody ever want to cover Turning Japanese ? great song, but singist seem to be embarrased if you suggest it lol. Another missed one is George Thorogood-Get your haircut and get a real job. Last 2 covers bands I was with had follically challenged lead singers, and the suggestion didnt go down well.

9. My missus aint been to a gig in years. as with the O.P she used to come to all of em. I realised years ago that girls love guitarists, but hate guitars.
10. Eddie Current... What a great name for a 50s Rock n Roll singer !
11. old Bass Collection, I got one, plays absolutely great, but cant get it to sound like quite like a Precision. I put a Mighty Mite Jazz neck on a precision type body of unknown origin, Kent Armstrong vintage pickup. All ebay stuff, Cost not a lot, and I'm well chuffed.
12.
Partridges are varnished anyway, it is a moist sponge rather than a dripping wet one. The 'theory' of the rust is the insulating oxide layer between the laminations breaks up eddy currents in the magnetic flux, but I have no idea if that is snake oil or not.
Seems about a hundred years since I was taught about that, and as a (mostly) service engineer, even longer since the information has been much use. But iirc, and I might not, its a special grade of low conductivity soft iron with a high proportion of silicon in it, thats coated in some kind of soft laquer. assembled in alternate E`s & I`s so that there are no shorted turns. Take an old transformer apart, you'll see what I mean. Cant see rust being part of the design, but it might help.
13.
Four. Tort. Rosewood. Flatwounds. It's all in the fingers.
Aah ! but whats the impeadence ?
14.
I think he meant, why would replacing them make a huge difference.
Cos they have a hard life, usually discoloured, and its a common problem with a lot of amps. I'd check or change the 1K Screen feeds to the EL34s as well, cos if one or two are O/C you might not notice that the amp is not running on all of the output valves. Only my opinion, based on experience though.
15.
Care to explain more?
The (usually)100K Resistors (Brown Black Yellow) connected to the anodes - pin 1 & pin 6 of each ECC valve. Assuming this is the correct schematic they are 220Ks on the first valve (Red Red Yellow). 16. Not an amp I'm familiar with, but tbh anything with ECC83s in,I'd swap the anode load resistors - all of em, theyre cheap enough and it often makes a huge difference.
17. Looks nice. Few tips if it aint too presumptuous. When I was an aprentice in a repair shop, donkeys yonks ago, Rexine (like tolex) used to clean up a treat using 1001 carpet cleaner, diluted about 10-1 with water, and put on and rubbed in with a brush. looked new afterwards. Most hard surfaces cleaned up with a mix of cloudy ammonia about 10-1 with water, plus about a teaspoon of fairy liquid, put it in an old plastic sprayer, spray it on, leave it a minute and wipe off. stinks, but its amazing stuff. Cloudy ammonia is a bit hard to get now though I think.
18.
As the guys say, it was the '53 to '56 Gibson EB1's that had the spike, definitely not the Fenders. Wouldn't these need a curved board though, to play it upright, otherwise it would be near impossible to play, no? I've only played one EUB, and a double bass, both have curved boards, not flat, like a P???
Must have dreamt it then, in my minds eye I can definitely picture an early Tele or Precision in an article about Leo Fender. Would make an interesting mod though wouldnt it. But with a small body, surely it would tend to 'twist' around unless you played it sitting down
19.
I'm sure I read somewwhere that the original Fenders had a rod inside the body, attached to the strap button so that you could pull it out and play it as an upright. Sounds a bit Irish to me. Danny O'Music...
Anybody ever seen one, or did i dream it ?

21. Sort the socket and the pot, otherwise leave it be. Two out of my three Bassas are far worse, . You wanna admre it or play it ?
22. Wouldnt mind a go myself. Whats the usual sp ? Fill the slots with epoxy resin and then sand it down, or something like ?
23. Spent a few years with a covers band that had been going with almost the same personnel since the mid 60s. They had a huge repertoire, and didn’t know when to call it a night, so if one drunk shouted more it could end up being a 3 hour set, and if one punter shouted a request, they just couldnt resist doing it. After 3 or 4 numbers the set list went out of the window. I learned a lot of covers, but they often used to throw in numbers I‘d never played, so I just had to busk it. Mostly by watching guitards hands cos I aint got a great ear. Forgot 99% of them within a few months of quitting. Cant remember many covers now, other than whats in my current tribute bands set, and I forget them half the time and have to blag it. Must be old age creeping up.
24.
That depends on how much load you're using. I wouldn't run 3 amps & a PA from one mains run from the house.
Why not ? I bet the total current drain with a small PA and no lights is under 5A. But you could use multiple extension leads from a 4 way thats powered via the trip if your worried. Does depend on the capacity and the length of the cable though.
25. Run EVERYTHING FROM THE SAME TRIP, a plug top type like you use for a lawnmower will be fine. Dont eat sausages that are not barbequed really well. and dont play with the grease on your fingers, its great at the time but yer strings will sound crap next day.
