Hope this would be the right thread Hi is there anyone in the Oxford/Swindon area that has a candy tangerine Fender (Jazz, precision, strat, tele..etc)..I have a Fender Jazz bass coming and want to get it sprayed the same as Mr Wolstenholmes Jazz...love the colour..I want to get it as close to a proper Fender colour and could do with a colour match. I can bring swatches to you if you are 20 mile radius of Swindon or Oxford. I have been down to Fender CS route and they weren't all that helpful, which is unusual for them... Can anyone help..if so post or PM me..Many thanks

Um... I had to meet a guy in the third cave along from Osama bin Laden where he left 15 cryptic clues to the whereabouts to the lost treasure of the Sierra madre and underneath there it was burried 15 foot down... Unbelievably after 2 years of hunting and basically giving up, I had the idea of putting a wanted ad on here and someone came forward...I couldnt believe it, I count myself very lucky..and it actually is a really good distortion pedal and undoubtedly the key to Chris' sound..forget about the other pedals this is the one.. my pedal board is on the pedal board thread on here if you want to see it....

Thanks, my thoughts were as clean a signal as possible. Funnily enough I thought the same would have been true of the bass synth wah which is why it is front of my distortions and your right it makes some great noises there..I can get such a good Uprising sound using it before an Animato, esp with a clean channel as well. I tend to use patch 4 quite a bit with everything turned right down except range at 9 o'clock..it also seems to act as a really good noise gate on this setting as well... Will probably mess around with the order when we aren't gigging as much. Thanks again and just waiting for it to arrive now!

Sorry if this isn't the first..and I am sure it wont have been...currently i run on Amp A Bass>BSW>Russian Bigg Muff>Animato>Bassballs>Line 6 Pod XT LIve>Amp I have just bought an OC2..well its on its way...I presume routed before the Distortion pedals? And so would it be better before the BSW or after?? The reason I ask is I use the ocatve effect on the Pod occasionally and it is after the Distortion pedals..doesn't always sound great but sometimes it works... Thanks

I use a Bass Pod Xt live..I think it is fantastic. I takes some time to get into..but I alway think this is a positive..there is something hateful about out growing your kit after 6 months. If you use the editing software via USB it is simply brilliant..easy to edit..easy to save and easy to Arrange. There is also a great tone sharing board on Line 6 website..quite often not on the mark but also they can be a great starting point to acheive the sound you are after. I play in THE UK Muse tribute, Hypermused, and this is one of the main stay effects that i use...Once into it it is easy to edit on the fly. It is best used in conjunction with Fuzz/distortion pedals as on the POd the Synth sounds and distortions can't be used together as they are on the same pedal..bit of a bummer, but distortion is best played on a pedal in my opinion...Having said that I thought I used to nail the distorted sound in New Born..and when I got my Animato I realised how close I had got..not perfect and the animato is obviously the key to the sound..but still it is all in the pod if you try. I think the modelled sounds are generally very good. I also looked at the boss GT6B but am actually glad I went the other way... Generally a good board, well made and so far indestructable..we do maybe 30 gigs a year with that band, 10-15 with another outfit I am in and we rehearse twice a week...never ever let me down, and please god don't let me speak too soon there as we have loads coming up this year As a regular gigger I would buy another one in a heart beat.....In fact I will be doing just that later in the year...

Russian Big Muff Vol...............................2pm sustain.........................2pm Tone runs at about....... 4pm This is used to fizz and distort in conjunction with a clean channel for the bass frequencies hence the toppy tone...

Lozz..good you have a deposit on your Marshall..someone will be a very happy punter. I think I might have found a great SH MIM jazz deluxe to get me started in the world of Fender, just need to seal the deal and find the cash! At about £350ish this is a great starting point for me..little financial risk if I don't like it..great main bass with my Rick if I do, and then maybe along the lines I will look out for a MIA....I did search for a MIJ but they seem to be rare beasts..I did own a Squire P bass that I bought as my first bass back in the early 80's...I hated it! Just such a dead sound..but the neck was fantastic...so far the neck has been like Triggers broom..3 new bodies and 2 changes of headstock shape..it is now about to go on a Rickenbacker shaped body with a mixture headstock of Fender/Rickenbacker to my design ( I am a cabinet maker so doing it myself )..the body is Maple/Yew and Oak backed for stability with a white banding..sounds odd but will be a real looker when laquored. It has spent the last 3 years drying out naturally so should be pretty stable...Yew is hard to work..very wet, can be highly figured but the grain goes all over the place due to the amount of branches so I am making a statement with any imperfections rather than trying to hide them. The pick ups are JP EMG with some other circuit board/preamp that a friend set me up with many years ago..they sound great..loads of punch..and I guess that is what I am looking for in the Jazz. If I manage to seal the deal I will post some photos..I will also shove some up of the Rickenender/Fenderbacker/trickenbacker/Triggenbacker/ anyone got any good names for a hybrid?
-
Joe Many thanks for that info..very interesting. Yes it was the Poles on the pick up..if they are adjusted to suit the neck curve then these must have been done by a blind man ..I have seriously never seen poles that far out of the housing before. I might have a word in our local music shop to see what their take on it is. I think that, as you rightly say, the only real difference is the truss rod..I would expect the MIA to be made from better quality wood for the body and neck..but I would doubt there is much in it. I am going to change the colour of the bass as soon as I get it as I am after a Candy Tangerine one, (can't find one anywhere) this is being bought as part of our Muse tribute band so needs to look like Chris' bass and I love the colour. As well as wanting a really versatile bass I want a quality product and with a bit of set up I am pretty sure that a MIM would do. Looks like you might have made my mind up for me....... Thanks again for the post...
There is a very obvious difference in the quality between models. The MIA basses are top quality with only the best parts and they are extremely well constructed (which is why they cost twice as much). The MIM basses are more likely to have some issues with the quality. Quality seems to vary from bass to bass, however the MIM basses sound amazing for the price.
Have to agree on sound vs value..the MIM I tried was very well put together. Looks like the pickups could be a stumbling point..but easilly changed I guess. What other build issues do you think they might have? Neck issues? Is it a case of if you find a good one buy it rather than buy blind off the net because it is a better price?
You can raise either side of a pickup. They usually use foam or sponge underneath and you can loosen or tighten the screws. If you wanted more volume from the lower strings then you can raise the left side of the pickup by loosening the screws. A problem with Mexican fenders is they seem to have poor pickups compared to the american market so that there is a difference. I found this out when i had lessons with a guy using an american deluxenp and when i played it i got lots of low end compared to my mexican P. Easy answer i swapped the pickups on my P to some Lindy Fralins. For a first time Jazz i would avoid both of these models. The Active deluxe edition doesn't give a very realistic jazz tone and i think the pre amps very cheap. The S-1's always sounded very flat to me and definately didn't seem to be worth the new value. My first jazz was an American Deluxe i picked off ebay for £580. I now have a Tokai Jazz which is my favourite bass i have played and that was just £360 off here. Another good few jazz's are the Fender Classic 70's reissue which is about £500 new and definately worth it, or the Squier Classic Vive which has great reviews on here.
Slight confusion with the pickups..I know you can shim them up but this was the actual pins on the pickup that were about 2 mm above the body of the pick up and only under the A string, I wondered if this had been set up like this to compensate for poor pickup construction? I am specifically looking for a Fender, I will have a good look at the Tokai later on, a friend had a Tokai Telecaster and absolutely adored it, but for the moment I want a Fender. As for the sound..it is interesting that you don't think the deluxe gives an accurate jazz tone, I will take that on board, but I actually liked the variation of tone acheivable on the model I tried..I think it will work well with my current prioject. Thanks for your input..I will check out the other models you mentioned.

Apologies for my ignorance but I am not really a Fender guy..however I want a more versatlie bass and had narrowed it down to an MIA or MIJ Jazz deluxe. However I tried an MIM jazz deluxe in my local shop and loved to the sound from the A upwards but the E string seemed a little flat and when dropped tuned to a D lost a lot of tone and volume. I noticed that the pins under the A sring on the bridge pickup stuck out a mile and I wondered if this shows that the pick up itself is not that great.does this have a significant effect on volume output? I presume it does, but I am no expert. Also the fact that the E string pins were flush with the body of the pick up means that maybe output could be boosted? Is this just a way of getting over a poorly wound pick up and is this the difference between the quality of the MIM and the MIA jazzes? Maybe it just need someone to set it up properly? One of the things I loved about the deluxe was the pickup blending options.. but I have also recently come accross someone selling an MIA with the S1 switching.which is supposed to mimick the deluxe and also the Precision tone...is this a good alternative to the deluxe? As you can probably tell I am rather "Green" on Jazz basses but there seem to be so many options it is hard to know where to strat..even having decided on a deluxe over the standard..well unless you guys reckon the S1 version is as good.. see what I mean... Any advice welcome to save hours and miles travelling around the country trying them all! Cheers

Thanks for the comments..much appreciated. I have been in touch with OBBM got a good quote for the right cables I need. Very helpful chap. I will probably hang off for a sec until I have finalised the finished layout/pedals etc..As I said somewhere before I would like an OC-2, also I am running the Hm on the clean channel to give a balls out sound for the end of the likes of Stockholm syndrome, doubling up 2 different types of distortion on different rigs definitely gets closer to the original sound but I might swap for it for a bass big muff or Russian big muff in the future. Once i have it sorted I will no doubt go down the OBBM route. With regard to the simple plug and play..it's an absolute godsend! I have to rig up our mac/ IEMs and other stuff at rehearsal as well and so anything that saves time is a bonus. If anyone does want a bespoke board, and you have a design in mind, then feel free to PM me for a price. If I can help out I will.

As you can see the board is now fully wired up. There is still room for a couple, possibly 3, more pedals...I can just get a boss pedal to the rt of the BSW, definitely get one between the Lehle and the boss HM and obviously to the left of the BB..so hopefully that should help future proof it. Although the way it sounds at the moment I can't think of too many additions. Had a great reheasal with it last night..never hit a knob by mistake and now it is all held down with velcro and the feet have been removed, and stored away safely, i can still make volume alterations to the pod if need be..despite the main knobs being covered. One of the nice things is the panel on the rt side. This has a fused/switched kettle style in put that is soldered to a 4 gang in the box. that covers a seperate supply to the Pod and then A Johnnyshredfreak power supply to all the other pedals. Many thanks to Johnny..he was a great help and brilliant service as well.I was going to run a seperate supply to the VE 20 as it draws quite a current but it all worked so well last night that I am going to leave it as it is. There is also room on the daisy chain to run another 3 pedals as well should I need it. I also love the fact that I took the time to solder in the Input and 2 output jack sockets so all I need to get going at gigs now are 3 leads and one power kettle lead....you should have seeen the amount of transformers and leads that I used to lug around..must have been mad! All in all I am really happy..the whole thing weighs in at just over 15kg..so not a back breaker, but admittedly not the lightest thing around. I think that I am not going to worry about a sepcific pedal board flight case but will look for a standard flight case as they seem to be cheaper S/H and also I need to be able to store other stuff for transport..like our IEM system/Mac etc..Have one spotted already so hopefully a deal can be done. Hope you like it..

As it turns out I used my new pedal board at rehearsal last night..All the original hum has pretty much gone..I guess new leads and power supply help, there are one or two patches on my pod that get a bit "Hummy" when used with my distortion pedals but it is a pod problem and i am sure I can clean it up. The board sounds amazing..is really tidy and i have a panel on the right with one jack input and two outputs, for the 2 amps and one Euroline swithed and fused input so I can just carry one powerlead. A big thanks to Johnny and johnnySredfreak for sorting out my power..no more bateries..ever..hurray!... There is room for a couple more pedals..still on the look out for an OC-2..but I am not sure that a noise suppressor in needed. Will post a couple of photos of the board tonight on the other thread.
The Boss is better. For the looping, the added control over the gating, extra DC out. Don't think there's any real difference tone-suck wise. Definitely go for the Boss.
Nice one..it was kind of where my thoughts were heading.
-
Hi all, Just a quick one I need a noise suppressor on 2 of my pedals..I have seen you tube clips etc..I like the fact that you can loop just a couple of pedals with the Boss..it doesn't look like you can do that with the decimator.. So the question is... Is that right? If you can't just loop certain effects with the decimator is it worth the extra money? What are your opinions on the better pedal with regards to which holds the tone better? Thanks
Funny that getting the "right sound" is more difficult than the actual basslines
Your not wrong there chap. Don't waste your money on an Impact unless you want to use it for other stuff as well. There are ways round it. Definitely 2 amps and 2 cabs (3 if you can afford it)..line splitter...Russian Big muff...OC-2...Env filter...Animato...BSW...etc..well I am sure you have all seen the clip Or I have a much better idea..don't buy the pedals save your money and employ Shane..he's a top bloke!

your board looks great. Loving the Moog pedals..uber cool. Power for my board should be here tomorrow so that will get banged on this weekend. Need some decent patch leads though. Used it set up at practise on WED and it worked really well. Just trying to find a decent case for it now..........ah its never ending!
All to often, thankfully only the 1x15 though. And TE gear is supposed to be heavy. The DBS heads are fantastic I have to say.
I've got the 7410 cab...what a noise but god it weighs some...I agree on the head..fantastic bass sound, never thought I would say that about Marshall. I also run and Ashdown/Trace Cab rig of the other side of my signal for a clean channel. The Trace is a 1510x cab and is really light compared to the Marshall. I'd like a 1 x 15 marshall DBS cab and another head but i am now skint!
-
I'd forgotton about the spiders!!... Oh and regards weight..have any of you guys ever lifted a DBS system? My board could weigh as much as a small Polynesian island and it would still be light compared to the Marshall
-
Hi Guys thanks for the comments on the board. I am pretty pleased with the way it is turning out so far. I knew before I started it that it was going to be slightly heavy, but actually it really isn't too bad. My original idea was to make it as small as possible but accomodate the pod as it does carry a lot of patches for live work. So I took the decision not to worry about size or weight. In fact the carpet makes it look bulky but it is all 1/2 inch..so really you have the base..MDF so quite light..the center cross section has most of it cut away to allow for the cable access to the muff and Animato and all the output/inputs on the back of the POD, the back is 6"tall and the sides which are sculpted..so all in all not too bad. The Black upstand is about 3mm thick and it is actually a special resin blackboard material that was left over from one of my jobs so weighs next to nothing. Obviously when all the pedals are on then it will weigh a fair chunk...So I thought I would get a flight case with castors on the bottom so I can drag it about. I was going to make the case myself but I have had a pretty fair price from Flightcase warehouse to make a case to suit, sometimes even as a guy in the trade you can't compete..especially when you add time and all the ally work, fasteners etc..and my time lost from other jobs as well, so unless anyone can recommend another company to get a comparison price, I expect the work will be going their way. I sent an email to Jonny shred freak regarding power and daisy chaining..haven't heard back yet. I am looking to power the Muff, Animato, Lehle, BSW, a boss OC-2, Possibly another Big Muff, Bassballs, and a Boss HM2..anyone know if I can do this off one of their systems?I suppose I need to work out the Milliamps but they only have daisy chains in 5's...can you keep linking or is 5 the maximum you can run? Thanks if you can help on that. Ah the Animato.....one of our very own approached me, and after 2 years of searching and about to spend out in Japan through a friend in OZ (don't ask!), I did a deal with him and it came last week. I had got to the point of thinking I was never going to find one and I am so lucky and grateful to him for getting in touch. I knew it was the most important factor in Chris Wolstenholmes sound and I thought I had got really close on the POD but it definitely has a sound all of its own and matched with the Marshall 7400 DBS and DBS cab just nails so many of the songs that previously I thought were Muff driven. I am very lucky..which for me makes a change I can tell you ;-) I will say that it is a great distortion pedal..I saw the thing on Youtube by Bassfuzz (?) and was totally unconvinced by the sound..mind you I only have the speakers on the laptop..it sounded hideously thin and I wondered how the hell I was going to get a good sound out of it but in the flesh it is much better. Nice to know that if the Muse trib ever runs its course I still have a really usable distortion pedal..and no I haven't worked out what the switch does either! Once I have got the power on and the pedals hooked up I will post some more photos..any help or recommendations on a case or the power supply then stick a post up or Pm me..Thanks

Well I finallly got busy in the workshop this weekend. Inspired by a lot of boards out there, I have been wanting a board for ages and having giged live with these all in a row, taking up half the stage, I thought I had better get on with it. It needs final wiring and the patch cables making..but it's a start..oh and there are a few more pedals to go on as well. My biggest problem was trying to find a standard size that would take the Pod as well as the other pedals. The 2/3 tier thing works reall well for me especially as the most used pedals are right under my RT foot. I can't get on with a totally flat board and as you can see I have an overhang to cover the controls on the POD as they are easilly moved and, as anyone who has one of these knows, a small amount of travel on these caught by your foot, changes the sound completely. All the power is housed under the top tier with access through the end for the mains cable. The lid is held down with 6 screw and caps as I don't expect to be accessing it often..probably just to run cables for new pedals. This wasn't difficult to make..I used quality 1/2" plywood for all the upstands and 1/2" MDF for all the flat bits..why?? Simples...I am a joiner and it's what I had lying around! Also the MDF is slightly lighter and as long as you are screwing through it into Plywood you have nothing to worry about...just don't screw into the end of MDF.. So far it has cost me £10 for the acoustic carpet and S/Adhesive velcro from my local ICE shop and about 4 hours work..I do have a workshop so that does make it slightly easier...See what you think.... Pictures of pedals being sited and me starting the carpetting Finished Carpeted board. The Black back upstand is going to be removable and is going to have Hypermused logo on one side and The Zen Pigs (Rock metal band I play in) on the Other... With a few of the final pedals on it Hope you like...

I wouldn't rule that out..New album supposedly coming in a years time...He'll be searching for some new sounds from somewhere. Presumably the Mark bass unit can acurately reproduce all of the Impacts sounds if the Youtube demo is anything to go by...Isn't every wave and patch 100% programmable via PC?

I missed one 3 years ago from a dealer for £65.00. I saw it on his site..phoned and he had sold it 10 minutes earlier...Gutted. I wouldn't pay the sort of money they go for now no matter how good they are. Reason..I nearly bought a faulty one for £100 I spoke to Akai Pro in the UK and they said if there were any problems that needed parts then it would be almost impossible to fix..esp if it was the main chip. So you would need 2 if you gigged them...not at that money. I saw one in the States go for £750...they were $120 new if I remember right.
