1. Any interest in trades for either of the below for the VT Bass Way Huge Pork Loin OD T-rex Squeezer Valve Compressor
2. I've got a Behringer BDI21 that I've just been using for recording direct into a laptop. I've only just begun to notice that you have to tweak the Blend knob to get any reasonable mid's or a usable tone. I might need to rig it up with the Puma at our next practice With the BDI or Bass VT would you recomend going into the normal Bass input on the Puma or into the effect return to cut out the Puma's Pre-Amp I terms of size and Volume and ease of moving the Puma is ridiculously light and pretty loud (it does benafit from having a ext cab plugged in to get the full headroom and volyume from all 500 watts) But if the Bass VT will get it as close to a B-15's tone as any other light weight and loud Amp would new (main contenders being Orange Bass Terror, Genz Benz Streamliner, CarvinBX500 or Ampeg PF800 with lightweight cab possibly barefaced)
3. When people suggest using the the VT or SFT pedal in front of an amp what are do you guy's have in mind in regards to what's being addded to the tone. My impression is that pedals are good for adding overdrive (if even only slight) to a clean amp's sound, but I"m not really after a overdriven amp sound as I tend to use OD and fuzz pedals for that quiet a lot. What I"m after in a tube amp is that warmth, responce to overdrive and fuzz pedals (what i tend to hear as a sort of cushioning whereby the harmonics are softened and don't sound as harsh and much warmer) and that tube tone/feel that often seems to come from the power amp (ie i've tried tube compressor or Od pedals infront of solid state pre's and it doesn't seem to feel the same) Although I tended to the run the B15 fairly hot in the studio it was still pretty much a clean sound and it had a beautifull glassy texture to the highs so i know I don't want to just add dirt and treble roll off to my existing amp will using a tech amp or catlinbread give me that or just make the amp not clean? does that make sense
4. So is this MeatBox a Octave pedal with added EQ boost or just a Subby Eq Boost I love my Aguilar for Octave bass tones and if I want to get really dubby slamming on the EHX Knockout with the Low boost makes for Shits and Giggles times Does the Meatbox essentially do the same in one pedal
5. Which Genz head are you running brensabre, also what Barefaced cab are you runnning it with. Up untill recently I've been weigh up between the Terror Bass, Streamliner or ? this may be the ? Just need to find one to try out now
6. Wow the Carvin sounds almost too good to be true, I'm gonna have to check out this amp
7. To my Ear's the Puma is too Modern/Hi-Fi sounding, It's EQ isn't in the right place for me Boosting Low's seem to boost freq's just beneath where it feel like you want them to so your getting a boomy/muddy sound rather than a deep full warm low sound and the lo Mid is too punchy not low enough. The only thing I love about it is how light it is, it sit's in one seat in a car and has wheel's on so it can be rolled. I also just don't have the space at home for a massive cab or 8x10 fridge I hope I can get about £750 for the Puma S/H if I'm buyin used gear I will likely not be able to afford to spend much more than that however if I'm buying new I could probably speend more and put some on a CC or HF
8. We're working with a Producer called Tom Knott in there at the moment (he used to work out of Manchester but moved back down this way a few years ago, also play's with I Am Kloot). When we started in there I only had a Behringer ultrabass that I was using as a back up for gigs as one of the speakers on the tecamp had blown so I just used what they had already been set up for me, although pretty excited to see such a nice vintage looking piece of kit there I wondered if something that small would be aggressive enough but in a iso room on it's own cooking some tubes it sounded awesome (PM me for some private links to early non release pre-mixes). I'm just not sure it would be loud enough for practice/gigging with a band and need something that would stay clean when competting with a drummer. Also it was pretty weighty and currently living in a first floor flat I just can't face carrying heavey stuff back up the stairs after practices and gigs? I was wondering how close something like the Genz Benz Streamliner or Ampeg PF-500 heads would get me to that sound and what cab's would be best to pair them with? Mr Foxen I may have to pop my head into your den when we're next at the Studio?
9. Really lucky to get to use a Ampeg B-15 (I believe) in Jim Barr's (of portishead and the blessing) studio 'j&j' on and off over the last few weeks as I've been tracking with my band 'Empty Pools' and I've totally fallen in love with that bass sound (played both jazz and precision on it). I can't imagine ever wanting to sound like anything else on record (I play through allot of fuzzes and OD's switching between clean and dirty sounds). I currently have a tecamp 212 puma combo but would prefer something head and cab, compactish (have to fit two guitar combo's and drum kit in two normal cars, much louder(drummers and all that) what will get me closest to that sound for not too much money don't mind S/H either for trade price of my combo or not too much more
10. Do you have any clip's or recording of this?
11. How does the sound of GS412 compare to some of the Barefaced Cab's?
12. What sort of difference in sound should I expect between the Aguilar and using the Isobaric Orange cabes (10 and 12 together)
13. Having been lusting after a new amp/cab for far too long and having been mightly impresed with the Orange Bass Terror's performance in the music shop test. It was to great glee that I saw the backline for a local festival gig my band had been booked for (fear of fiction, Bristol) included an Orange Bass Terror and Aguilar 4x12 (not knowing these cab's by name for some reason I had imagine a overly wide guitar cab being in place) Much to my lust when I arrived and saw the well built tall beauty that was a GS412 sitting up on stage I'm not ashamed to say I was more than alittle aroused. The soundcheck and ensuing gig was awesome. Having developed a bad habit of never asking for anything during a soundcheck and so alwasy only ever hearing spill from the rest of the band on this gig I did not care as I delighted in hearing every sweet not that issued from my bass (apart from the increasingly annoying hiss/hum generated by the combo of a corvid fuzz and aguilar octave pedal). Having got used to the neccesity of boosting mid on the OBT to get a flatish sound this amp is really happening for me know and through this cab it sounded simply awesome. Vintage, warm, round and proud bass tone. Following a small tour last weekend supporting Menomena also using a BT this time into a ampeg SVT-15E I believe (great sound listen off stage but not placed in a helpfull place to hear when playing support) I'm definlty sold on the Bass Terror as my must purchased soon amp. Unfortunatly I will not have the room (either in my flat or in my band mates two cars that provide our gig transport) to look at pairing it with a Aguilar GS 412 any time soon. :-( Any hot tips on smaller cabs that will get me close to that sound.
14. How's this sound on bass - any bass loss or mid bump?
15. do you still have that tap trem nocking around ?
16. Pics in the morning but considering moving on some if the below All prices posted recorded delivery add £4 for next day Electro Harmonix Octave Multiplexer, in box £35 T-Rex Squeezer - Valve driven compressor - £100 Sub decay flying tomato mk2 - modded fuzz face pedal £95 Way Huge Pork Loin Overdrive - £68
17. Flying Tomato still available
18. Is this the Farida FJB-6, it's shame if they are that good that you can only get them in Red or White, neither of which appeal to me and FJB-20’s seem to be going above £300 now even S/H Also the G&L shape doesn't hit the spot for me either I tend to favour tobacco sunburst, black or darker coloured basses I already have a mexican P&J so I’m just looking for pure J setup at the moment. I'd probably look to upgrade the pup's ony any cheap bass but not to interested in doing hardware upgrades unless absolutely necessary so the Squire CV's look liked they would pip the VM's . Interested in the Tokai (sounds too good to be true) would like to hear more about those particularly where I could pick one up keep the idea's coming
19. We're talking tone and quality, names don't bother me at all I want to not spend too much but get a instrument that can stay with me for some time Let here your thoughts
20. power tube valves are the real deal for valve sound put another way how many classic guitars sounds come from Overdrive Pedals through loud (clean/or not) valve amps (ie soild state drive going through valve gain stages before valve power)
21. As new apart from the velcro which can be removed before dispatch
22. Got Terror GAS after reading the Bass Mag Review and Tests
