Whatever wood you make it from it still sounds liek a bass, wood has a small effect to the sound produced, but a fairly large effect on the ssound of a bass, since the spectrum of sounds from different basses is very much more narrow that the spectrum of possible sounds. Also consider if the body is vibrating, the pickup is also, and its the movement of the string in relation to the pickup that makes the sound, if the string is still and the pickup moves, sound will be made (like microphonic feedback).

Buy expensive strings and schuck them in a tub of meths between changes.

This program AP tuner I use to tune at my pc has a frequency analysis function, fairly interesting to see a breakdown of the harmonic content of your bass output.

Can't really generate Doom SPLs with that sort of lows.

Did it with some pieces of wood, ended up with no lower bridgeward screw, as that piece of wood got in the way of the wire. The poles are too narrow spaced, so it looks wrong, but sounds fine. Also have to shim the whole neck pocket as the poles touch the strings even when all the way down. Used dense card, but will score some veneer for it.

Will need a preamp. A quite good power amp is probably beneficial, I think they suffer a little more with straight instrument signal.

Think someone (OldGit?) was selling a Randall Biamp head. Had a crossover and two outputs, bass and treble, with different sized power amps.

I tuned ADGC, mostly used those lows for loads of bottom, if I was ever actually playing notey stuff, I'd be playing in standard bass range. In all the pics you can see me fretting around the 7th fret. Big giant custom tapered newtone strings and lots of speakers.

Sansamps are real nice though, and a few seem to be floating about.

Did you lot buy all these? Now the bass for it has arrived they've all gone. Grrr.

If there is a price up, I'll pay some attention, if its asking for offers, I'll only shoot a madly lowball offer, and only if its something I specifically want. Plenty of stuff I didn't especially want but bought cause it was a bargain, then found a use for. People who don't state their price do my wallet and living space a favour.

What's the neck profile like? Chunky or skinny?

Pretty much only buy basses if they are something of a bargain. Best so far was a P copy for £17, someone had obviously put a bunch of money into upgrading it, it had a anodised plate, heavy bridge and EMGs in it. Stripped it a rebuilt it into my bass of Doom.

I'm thinking a chunk of scratchplate material, or even wood fitted underneath will do the trick. Like a big washer.

Have all the parts, thought I'd have it apart and stick it in. Nope, the route is far larger than the pup, so there is nothing to screw into. I know people have done it. How? Grrrr!

So round ports are best for port purposes as have least internal surface and smooth airflow, but the shelf/slot jobs provide bracing, which is more significant in the real world. And my grandad's books on jet air intake flow and fluid dynamics is sort of applicable, but is has to work in both directions.

Umph loves stuff like that.
