2. It would appear that the "vulture" is living up to his name. Scouring the proverbial desert of basschat in search of some quality goods to scavenge. Harvey's behaviour is not nice, not right, not acceptable and not welcome IMO.
 3.
Time spent out in the real world gigging & meeting other musicians GREATER THAN Time spent in bedroom widdling over chord changes EQUALS success IMO.
+ 1 Only thing I could add is that you should get a GOOD bass tutor. What I mean by that, is someone who has worked as a bass player in the areas you want to work (not a guitarist who can half-arse himself some bass lessons) and they will/should improve your practical skills like reading and your technique at a much quicker pace than if you try and work it out on your own. It's also important to learn from their experiences and discuss tips/shortcust they use to do the same job quicker. My old bass tutor used to tell me stories all the time and I always thought he just liked talking, but most of his tales have helped me at some point. One example that springs to mind is a story he told me about the first reading gig he did. He said he turned up and tried to be polite, shaking hands with the MD/players and introducing himself but found they all gave him funny looks and ignored him. MD pulled him to one side after and explained that the people who had paid (some posh punters) didn't know he had cobbled together a group of readers for the gig and that he didn't want the payer to click on, because once he realised the band didn't often play together, he would start listening more carefully for errors. This particular story helped me A LOT in the way I've conducted myself professionally and helped me avoid rookie errors that he had made, thanks to his advice.
 4. New Aguilar Tonehammer 500, coming soon. New lightweight amp. Looks like it could be interesting for all the Aggy fans out there (like me lol).
 5.
My apologies - I'm based in Swindon. I can get some pics up this week but I assure you it is in the same condition as shown in the link - absolutely spanking new! where are you based? Might be willing to meet part of the way. Thanks Freddie
Leeds most of the time, but as of tomorrow I'll be back up near Newcastle for Christmas with relatives. Probably going to be too far for collection for me I'm afraid, so I'll bow out.
 6.
well im not wanting to be the next best thing..im really not interested in fame or money...i just want to get involved in something im passionate about with others who feel the same.... there arent many people who feel the same around here..
So you want to move to one of the most expensive areas of the country with it's highly competitive/saturated music scene, just to play music you're passionate about for little money?! Sounds like a CRAZY idea to me... So crazy it might just work?
 7. I'm really interested but have a few questions. Any pics? And could you put your location (for collection) and tell me whether you'd be willing to post please?
 8. No effects here. Just a compression unit (not used for effect) and a tuner.
 9.
...and as we all know,no one is more anti Tab than Jeff Berlin.
Apart from maybe you, Doddy
 10.
Without going down he argument route again,no it isn't.
+1 (ish) I agree that using tab to learn a song in advance of a rehearsal or as a way to remember what you have done is an acceptable practice. However, tab is certainly not on par with notation in terms of accurately and specifically expressing the intentions of the music and/or the composer, so that it can be performed in the same way by any trained musician. There are many reasons why session musicians, pit musicians and most other pros don't use tab. The most important being that tab does not correspond (and often contrasts) directly with the annotation and written music other instruments such as brass, piano, drums etc will be using to perform from (standard notation). For example, what would happen in a pit ensemble if the bassist was reading from tab whilst everyone else reads dots and then the MD tells you "we go to the reprise at bar 45, not bar 49"... the bassist's tab and it's lack of bar numbers/written structure instantly becomes a useless and redundant tool. This sort of thing is what makes tab a poor alternative in comparison. It's not specific or accurate enough.
 11.
That's the first time that I've heard of tab for piano, and that makes no sense to me whatsoever. I've never seen drummers use Tab either.
I must admit, I think it's dreadful and can't see how it would be useful or helpful to anyone. Drum tab is just as bad. As a secondary music teacher, I battle with this all the time and it annoys me beyond belief. Luckily though, we use a resource which is fantastic for getting pupils to learn music without using awful (and nearly always incorrect) forms of tab. It shows live musicians and chords, all playing the song. The technique is questionable in some of the videos, but that is a lot easier to correct than trying to stop pupils from relying on tab http://www.showmehowtoplay.com/multiplayer.html
 12.
I don't see any reason to exclude tab, I've found it very useful in learning lines. Perhaps your need will depend on the target audience. As a bass player who came to bass guitar, late in life, it's invaluable. Apart from "guitars" do any other instruments use TAB? I started to learn piano music when I was 6 and worked my way up to Grade 7, but jumping to "guitar" with lines way off the stave was a shock to the eye and the brain. TAB would certainly ease the transition for those like me who have come to bass/guitar from other non-guitar-like instruments. When I'm playing along to tracks and checking out the bass music/tab book, TAB just provides the bare notes. Once I've got the bare notes I move onto fingering. When I feel more comfortable with the basic line, I refer back to the notation for the feel/expression. Balcro.
Yup, piano too (example) - http://www.tabnabber.com/view_Tab.asp?song...+Stop+Believing Drummers use tab too. I don't think anyone on here is saying that tab should be completely excluded from bass books. We just think that there should be a way to use the book so that you can remove the tab and/or notation depending on the way you need to use the book at the time. I'm still thinking that icastle's idea of a book that you can flip upside to read the one you want is pure genius!
 13.
How about fitting two books into one? Hold the book one way and you have the notation version. Flip it over so the reverse cover becomes the front cover and you have the tab version?
Either way. When I said fitting two books into one, i meant having one book, but split so that you have (for example); Chapter One - Notated Examples Chapter Two - Tab Examples But both sections containing the same music. But it has to be said, the flipping over idea is genius! BassChatters are a creative bunch, aren't we?
 14. I've never understood why people who write bass books cannot just split tab and notation into two sections. Normally, the book has just notation, or it has notation with tab situated directly beneath, giving people (usually bass students ) the temptation to look at the tab when they start to struggle. I wonder if one day someone will write a book where they just, essentially, have two books in one. Part One - Your music/book written all in standard notation. Part Two - Your music/book written entirely in tab. This would allow people to cross-reference (like looking up the answers in a maths book at the back) to see if they are playing the right thing and would allow each individual to play along with either tab/notation depending on what they prefer. It would also remove the problem of having tab and notation right next to each other for people (i.e. teachers/instructors) who don't want tab to be present when using the material with students. Just an idea though, don't know how practical it would ACTUALLY turn out to be

 16.
Yeah thats the one I played, I might have played a good one but what a superb bass, just brilliant. The build was fantastic and the neck felt amazing, its not what I bought but I am in the new year after I have let the new one settle in.
I own the same model (but I put a Tort. scratchplate on it). Mine is actually wearing away already because I've gigged it so much. My mates love it so much that they constantly nag me to let them use it for gigs too, so it's gigging even without me! Since I put flats on though, it's been in a world of it's own. I bought mine at easter time, 2008 for £469 (new) and it's the best money I've ever spent on a bass, hands down! I hope you manage to find another one as nice, because these are great, great basses. Good luck!!

 19.
The other huge suprise was the MIM 50's precision, what a bass, I couldnt believe it. £500 and just a lovely playing well built, massive sounding bass....There is one going on the list (along with a J pickup to go on the bridge). I just loved the neck shape and feel, superb! Anyway, I didnt buy anything in the shops as they are far too expensive, but I picked up a new toy today, its Fender, its pretty, it was a massive bargain, and i am over the moon.......pics to come (and a 50s Precision)
Is it a 50s Precision bass like this, because if it is, I would agree! http://guitarguitar.co.uk/bass_guitars_det...=06112213062018 Really superb basses and if you stick some flats on, it'll rock the sh!t out of EVERYTHING!
 20. I was inspired earlier by the "Who's put their tree up then?" thread to put some decorations up today. I then noticed that my bass/basses looks VERY pretty in the light coming from just my christmas tree/fairy lights! Does anyone else think their bass looks pretty in such light? I was hoping I could create a tangental thread that combines the "Who's put their tree up then?" thread, "Photography fun" thread and some "Gear Porn" goodness! Do your worst people! Hopefully this should be something we can all enjoy
 21.
What's the instrument that sounds a bit like a muted trumpet?
Do you mean the Erhu? 22.
My point exactly, though I'm sure it was a slip of the keyboard, you referring to Neil Young, as opposed to Paul Young...
Haha, indeed. It was because I was reading the "Spelling" thread at the same time and laughing at the use of "Neil" as an exception to the "I before E" rule. Oh, the cruelty of irony lol.
 23.
I totally agree regarding having some input and to that end I don't see Nathan East, Pino Palladino et al being called upon solely for any ability to simply copy what someone else may have done, though of course certain songs will certainly have bass lines that simply don't need to be changed. But I'm also referring to recording original material with top artists where they employ a bass player just as much for their ability to come up with the right lines.
Pino is employed just as much for his ability, creativity and musical contribution as he is for his ability to "blend in" and do as he's told. Prime example being his original and spectular fretless work with Paul Young... oh and his work with D' Angelo... oh and John Mayer... oh and Elton John! (You get the point )
I'm spending my time pit bound at the Lichfield Garrick. Is anyone else having a Christmas filled with 6/8 time signatures and power ballads?
Yes. And you missed out the word "dreadful". It should have read "Is anyone else having a *dreadful* Christmas filled with 6/8 time signatures and power ballads?"
 25.
This is him, in a more serious environment, still with his 8 string though: The comments say his real name is Hyunmo Kim and it looks his band is called Oriental Express.
I'll probably be shot for saying this, but anyone else thinking that he's a bit of a one-trick pony? Personally, I think his slap playing on that oriental express track is quite intrusive and lacks regard for style/taste or musical sensitivity. It just sticks out like a sore thumb and SCREAMS of someone trying too hard to be heard. There is no doubting his technical ability, but I think his lack of musicality really shines through in that particular clip. *eagerly awaits insults, mockery and forum death*
