Do you play "better" after your holidays?
lowhand_mike replied to skankdelvar's topic in General Discussion
i really hope that this break thing is true as we have a gig in about two and a half weeks and only one practice before it. and i'm very similar to delberthot as i dont really pick my bass up during the week, just at practices. though if we have new songs to learn i will go through them a bit before the next practice to get my head round it but thats about it. and without wanting to sound big headed i normally have the sound down before the rest of the band. -
Post your pictures, Lets see what you all look like.

found an old photo of me with hair at uni about 12ish years ago and my now departed beloved stingray (the only shot i have i think) sniff -
Oooooooh didn't know you could do this! Well here you go. Here's the example. Excuse the quality as I was literally just fiddling around with his riff (Fnar!) in audacity so it's not great quality/very accurate. But you get the idea.
sounds great to me (timing aside) so is that what he is complaining about as to me it complements it well
What format have you got the clips in? You are allowed to add a 25MB attachment to your posts here. Hopefully this random .wav will work.
genius

from what i have recently learnt (and its not much ) play the root and use the scale to move to the next chord change say the 3rd and 5th of the scale (if it fits that is) and then say for the chorus follow the guitar to strengthen that. if that works then you can start adding to you root stuff

Please help me choosing new amp and effects pedal

+1 for the ashdown service, it realy is second to none. any time i've had a question the response has been really quick (by email) and if you phone them they are just as good. -
i've got an ibanez SR500 - i love it. i've gnoe on about it enough on basschat though...
me too but what the hell. here's some better pictures
Thanks to everyone for posting on this. On the tuner front, picked up an ex-demo Peterson StroboStomp for £50 which I was quite pleased with! With amps/DI, I think I'm going to look at amps and then think about DI boxes later. We can hire/borrow a DI for the studio if necessary! On the amp front, I went to Denmark St but was a bit gutted about the lack of bass amps to try (esp with Sound Control and Turnkey now closed). I'm going to pop to Anderton's in the week and try a few amps, and just wondered if people had any thoughts on the following:
Ashdown MAGC410T-300 307 watt 4x10 Bass Combo - http://www.andertons.co.uk/acatalog/info_MAGC410T250.html - looks quite heavy, but I drive to most gigs, so should be OK. Ashdown ABMC210T 500 Evo II 575 watt 2x10 Combo - http://www.andertons.co.uk/acatalog/info_ABMC210T500.html - bit lighter and probably a more sensible choice! Eden Silver Series N15S 175W 1x15 Bass Combo - http://www.andertons.co.uk/acatalog/info_N15S.html - a bit less powerful, but quite a bit cheaper. Not sure that it would be powerful enough for gigs. MarkBass MINI CMD121 P Bass Combo - http://www.andertons.co.uk/acatalog/info_MINICMD121P.html - quite a bit more expensive (no food for me for a month or so if I get this!), but obviousy very light. Just not sure how it will compete with REALLY loud drumming!
I'm going to give them a try, but any of your wise suggestions would be welcome. If it helps, I'm leaning towards the Ashdown MAGC410T-300 307 watt 4x10 Bass Combo. Ta, Iain
cant comment on the eden or the markbass but as for ashdown the mags have a brighter sound than the ABM which you could say is a little more classic sounding. the mags have plenty of punch and are not muddy contrary to popular belief (IMO), my 210 is loud and has served very well for all our gigs so far (up to 200 ish punters) so the 410 will give you a bit more and you can always add another cab later. the abms like i say have a bit more of a thud to them but you can still eq a brightish sound to them they also have the tube section on the amp. they have been said to sound slightly quieter than the mags but that is probably due to the less mid rangey sound. really you'll need to try them but they make a great sound. down side is they are not light, my 210 weighs in at around 30kg so expect quite a bit more from the 410 -
sorry barry i didnt get a chnace to get down to denmark street to back up your assumptions but looks like you have made the right choice, dammit this site always make me want something new. have to see if you can get us some sounds of your new setup. kudos!
-
hehe, yep, it shappens to all of us. fortunately i have little to no time to piss let alone change my setup around, i'm also a bit lazy when i do have time, dont get me wrong i have a looooonng list of stuff i want now though happy gassing
It does strike me as just a tiny bit ludicrous that people can knowingly move in next to something (potentially) noisey like a church or kennels or whatever, and then complain about it.
that the english government for ya
Straight bat answer. Just like everything else. Once, yes, it's OK. Maybe 30 or 40 times, NO. It could be you were both equally at fault. There are no exceptions. Balcro.
ah ok a mine field of a mine field
Similarly with lowhand_mikes 5.33 post, if he had made an excessive noise for a couple of hours and repeated it time and again, day after day, week after week, then yes, the neighbours would have had a case. They and anyone are entitled to sit in their home without a radio or telly on.
but it is ok for him to stand out side in the back garden screaming and shouting everytime the music goes on?
Good to hear they are nice to everyone! I went in there to ask how to do some basic functions using Ableton Live (I had seen the keyboard bloke playing with it) and he was more than happy to sit me down and talk me through it, even though I wasn't there to buy. When I do want the full version, guess where I will buy it from? The difference in price (sometimes nothing, £10-£20, sometimes more) is nothing compared to good customer service. That is priceless.
exactly, and the sad thing is it really takes no effort at all to be nice, not smothering, just nice. -
I've never had a problem in the Cellar. That's because, to be honest, I go in there for 30 seconds, or look in the window to see if they have anything I've never seen in the flesh before. I'd never bother trying anything out or (gasp) buying something, because of all I've heard about the staff. Oh, and the steely glare I get as I walk in. On the other hand, Rockers is the same group, and they're nice and helpful, if a bit young and metal. They've found all sorts of bits for me, and tell me to go and take anything I want down from anywhere in the shop, and play with it as soon as I walk in. There's another one of the same group, can't remember which, where I had a similar experience. First time I ever walk in: "Can I help you?" (Said nicely) "I've just come in to look at basses" "They're all towards the back. Feel free to get anything you like down and play it"
is that the one that is almost opposite the bass cellar? -
not seen these before but as they are quite old now thats not suprising, but this lot seem to think they are pretty special http://reviews.harmony-central.com/reviews...ressionist/10/1
We are sorry to see a small proportion of our 200,000 plus customers each year feel they have received bad customer service, we welcome all feedback both negative and positive. Yours sincerely, The Bass Cellar.
haha, what did i say bass bash at the cellar anyone? the sign saying don't waste our time would be humourous IF the staff actually gave a sh*t, problem is they seem to embody the attitude of the sign to the letter. even the simple thing of greating customers as they walk in take little to no effort and sets up a good feeling never happens, and i have walked around in there for about half an hour with no sign of interest from the staff, well apart from simone when she worked there, and its not exactly the biggest of places. i got better service from sound control under virgin (when it was there) and from turnkey, approachable and willing to spend some time with you even if you are just 'looking' to weigh up exactly what you are after. -
meeee from last night's gig at the Peel in Kingston:
see you are loving your new warwick, nice -
this all reminds me of when i was about 17 learning to play, our neighbours at the time where real twats. they complained at the slightest sound. i would be up in my room playing along to cd's, and he would go out into the back garden and start shouting at me to "turn the f***ing music down". now i could here this from my room with the windows shut, clearly he was making more noise than me as i could here him over the music. i had the police called out on me several times to no result on his part. even to the point one day where ha came round and threatened me to my face and as is typical with this kind of twonk he had no back bone to follow up said physical threat. One time he came round complaining again and my mum answered the door, it too loud etc so she went into their house to have a listen, they had no tv on, no radio, their kids weren't allowed to make any noise, they sat in complete silence and all my mum could here was a faint low hum. i never pay attention to people like this as i am generally considerate of noise levels but there are simply some people that will complain for the sake of it, like the ones that will sit through a whole tv show that they don't like just so they can complain about it. If you dont like it don't f***ing watch it. same applies to moving into a house, you check it all out properly, if not your stupid fault, you wouldn't buy a house without getting a survey done, visit it during the week not just weekends and not just during the day. bah rant over
-
tis funny, when we play together we are all in sync, but if we have one of the songs playing through the monitors and our drummer plays along with it he falls out of time. we never have that problem when we all play together, guess its just the compensation thing that wateroftyne mentioned.

looked at that and thought, eh? 4 flat sharps. but i think you ment 4 flat's (b's might have helped) any chance this can be made a sticky some where cos it has really helped me understand some of the basics and outline things i didnt quite get before. it is getting a little in depth now, which is no bad thing. sarah is this making more sense to you? if not just ask (not me though cos i'm still getting to grips with it )
