dub Posted August 10, 2010 Share Posted August 10, 2010 The steinberger is starting to look attractive after my musicman 5 got delayed when flying to a gig. Not a great prospect having to play a gig with a borrowed four string that got me through the sound check. Fortunately my bass arrived just in time. It made me realise a bass that will fit in overhead lockers would be very useful. I tried a graphite steinberger years ago, a great design but a very hard tone. Just because a bass will fit in the overhead lockers is no guarantee that you will be allowed to take it onto the plane with you. This is entirely at the discretion of the check-in and cabin staff and no matter what you've been told by the airline before arriving at the airport, or what previous experience has been if they don't want it in the cabin, it won't be going in the cabin. 2. The new Steinberger bass sound completely different to the classic 80s models - they have little in common other than the basic shape and the name. That may or may not be a good thing. Ever seen anything similar? Fat Rich Posted August 10, 2010 Share Posted August 10, 2010 +1 on the Status Streamline, they sound huge. There was also a Hohner Steinberger type thing in the 80s, but made out of wood. Sounds a bit weedy instead of woody in my opinion but you could probably pick one up fairly cheap. Blimey, just looked on Ebay and they're still making them £400! BassBus Posted August 10, 2010 Share Posted August 10, 2010 Strange how people hear different things in the same instrument. I have a Hohner B2A from the 80s and I love the sound. Good to play for all the obvious reasons (mass, balance, size) Good, woody tone on GDA&E, but the B lacks weight of tone, probably due to the very low overall mass of the instrument.
