Gibson Grabber G-1

Hi chaps, Im after a bit of advice.

Currently trying to negotiate a price for a 70's G-1, not sure of date but its in good nick and has been refinished in a pale blue. He had it advertised at £1200 which i thought was ludicrous. He wants £900 which i still think is too much for a grabber that isn't all original.

Am I going crazy? what is about right for the bass?

Cheers

EvilLordJuju and neepheid are your men for this, but I'd have said £500 absolute tops. Even assuming an all original in good nick with OHSC is worth a grand, the refin halves the value. I paid £500 for an RD Artist with non-orig p/ups and electrics which I reckoned was fair.

Nice basses tho! :)

Im glad you agree!!!!

He is pretty stubborn about it, i think he has got gibson and vintage in his head and come out with a crazy price.

you pissed of enough to sell it to me?

Walk away. The guy is dreaming. I wouldn't pay more than £300 for a refinished Grabber, particularly one which has been refinished in a colour they were never made available in. I'm not precious about these things personally but I've just got my collector's hat on. You don't say whether or not a case is included.

As a previous G-1 owner my view is - If its all original with OHSC and in good condition i'd say £500 - £550 for a G-1. If its all original without the case id say £400 - £500 depending on condition. If its non-original with case i'd say same depending on condition and mods. If its non-original without case it can be anywhere between £300 and £400 depending on condition and mods.

I've seen a few Grabbers and Rippers at these crazy prices recently and the simple fact is that the basses are not worth that much. They are nice but unless you are looking at a museum piece I wouldnt be bothering for that cash.

Lucky bugger, love the (look of the) artist bass what's it like to play?

I've been tempted to sell but it just records so ridiculously well! Mine is a f***in nightmare live though. Any heat and the intonation just ceases to be, this is true of every one I know of too. Plus I'd be hard pushed to find another one. Mine doesn't have it's case, has been sanded down (by the looks it was once black). 40% of the cost for me was shipping and tax, I imported it from California.

I moved that one on - it was a natural finish one someone had put chrome EB-3 p/ups and a bart preamp in, now got an all-original fireburst one; http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=76091&st=60 (second post down) - TBH I kind of preferred my old modded one, mainly as it had such a great tone switched passive; like a T'bird but with more middy punch and endless sustain.

Like most Gibsons they're marmite basses; I find this and the T'bird the most ergonomic of all body styles as they're so comfortable for "Entwhistle-style" right-hand technique, are hugely heavy, clubby neck, extra-long scale (34.5"), and contrary to popular belief don't neck dive. Got it's faults yes - I dislike the Moog electrics - but absolutely unique and produce a wall of sound :) . Crikey, for that money you could by a proper Gibson USA *new* Grabber II:

Which I'd quite like.
