I've just ordered some TI flats and I'll let you know how I get on. My Sterling has a Nordstrand pup and a maple board and it's really aggressive sounding especially through my GK rig. I just want too see if I can calm it down a bit.
I've had a set of TI flats s and some D'Addarrios on my Flea (which somewhat surprisngly came strung with flats anyway) and it really works. I couldn't describe the sound as either Motown or traditional, but it was different to anything I'd produced tone-wise previously. It was perhaps a more clinical and controlled sound than I would get with the same strings on my Precisions. In fact, whereas on the Precisions I can get a close approximation to a flatwound tone by rolling off the treble on a set of roundwound strings, this was not true of flats on the Flea, which had a sound pretty much of their own.
