Help me decide what setup I am looking for!

I posted last week end to get some advice regarding whether to go with 2x10 or 1x15. I had some great feedback, the consensus being try 2x12. Notwithstanding the Eden 212 in the for sale thread which, to my great disappointment, the logistics of collection are too challenging I think 2x12 is out of my price range.

I have thrashed about in the for sale thread, ebay, gumtree etc. over the last 2 months looking at any and all options open to me but I think a more focused approach may yield better results, so once again I am asking for advice.

. My preferred budget is £500 (if 2x12 I might be able to go to £600 but am not optimistic this is realistic) - second hand
. We play small gigs, pubs, rooms with up to 200 people (if we are lucky)
. Our drummer is loud!
. The solution must be portable, thus 4x10 is a definite no - so either a combo or small cab & head
. Music is mainstream rock or rock/pop with some Gary Moore blues, Brian Adams, Santana thrown in (depending on the audience)

If I can get any recommendations that might end my frustrating search I will be so grateful.

Thanks in anticipation, Peter

I take it your budget is for a cab and a head, not just a cab?

When you say portable, do you mean light? One-man lift and carry? Or are you short of boot space and want something compact? I'm just thinking if it's the former but not the latter, you could bundle two 8ohm 210s together to get the 410 effect but in more spine-friendly boxes.

Unfortunately if you want serious volume from a single light and compact cab you're looking at pushing your budget a bit. Schroeder 1212s appear on here now and then for £4-450 used and they are amazing little boxes, but it wouldn't leave you much change for a head.

For a cheap(-er) amp with lots of grunt the Hartke LH500 and Warwick ProFet 5.2 are worth looking at, both 500w into 4ohms, easily enough power for anything you're likely to get up to and a good match for a single 4ohm 212 or a pair of cheaper 210s.

The TC Electronic RS212 is a great size and weight. It's ceramic but not the weight you'd expect. Brand new with a padded cover you are looking at £490 ish. I would definitely recommend testing them...they are getting a lot of praise even from Tom Bowlus on Talkbass.

Or...two Aguilar GS or DB112s...secondhand.

You are absolutely right I have looked at both - the frustrating thing is I can't organise the logistics of picking either of the cabs up! (a combination of distance and size).

Picking up the heads is not an issue.

East Midlands to Stansted? Get a train and a taxi. It's a surprisingly light cab, you can carry it 100 yards without feeling it too much.
