What a groove...

I don't usually do this, because it'll just open the doors to loads of "that's great"/"nah, it's crap, Binky McFlossnut could've played it twenty times better standing on his own arms" stuff... but I've been getting back into some Northern Soul kind of stuff recently. One of the stand-outs for me from the tunes I've heard is this little beauty:

Information on Brunswick Records and their session players seems to be hard to come by on the net, but I think it's Bernard Reed on bass. Nothing spectacular technically, but that lovely octave pattern in the chorus really holds the song together, and that driving line through the verses just gets to me. Makes me want to dance, and I guess that's what bass is all about. :)

Good man, I just love Northern Soul.

Although it was a guilty pleasure when i first got in to it back in the 70's, because at the time myself and all of my peer group were into prog and heavy stuff.

I had one denim jacket covered with badges and patches of Led Zepp, Heavy Metal Kids, Sabbath and such like.

And another one with the Torch and Wigan Casino and the like, that I wore away from home.

Rebel without a clue!

Amen to that. While I admire the technical ability of the chop meisters (we all know who they are) it's the guys that groove and make you want to move that really impress me.
