One audition. Four Songs. One Hour

When I was young, my uncle turned up at the door and said, 'Heard you play bass - jump in!' Linwood Bowling Club and 2 hours of gigging later I got a tenner! Stil don't have a clue what I played!

A similar thing happened to me about 7 years ago. A bass playing friend reccomended me to dep for him without telling me. I got a call from the band leader telling me when the gig was. I asked what tunes they played and was told all the standards. I asked if we would have a practice beofrehand, he said no I would be fine. We played for 3 hours, I spent all night playing tunes I'd never heard before! Never got called back.

I've probably told this story before but I did an audition under similar circumstances. I now dread the words, "don't worry, they're all standards". In fact that's guaranteed to make me refuse the audition/gig. It transpires that one person's "standards" are another's deeply obscure, mysterious, complicated songs.

I spent that audition with the guys incredulous that I'd never even heard of *any* of their songs followed them "trying to help" by doing some mysterious tic-tac hand-signals that (I'm told) are supposed to show the chords. Sigh!

I've heard that and then you arrive at the audition/rehearsal/gig and find they are 'standards' but with half the chords changed because they are not playing it in a 'standard' manner:

Me: 'Shouldn't that chord be a Bm?'
Guitarist: 'I've never played Bm, I always play E7'
Me: 'That'll be why you've changed the melody line too.'
Guitarist: 'That's just the way we play it.'
Me: 'OK, E7.'

Yes, don't know, yes.....

However, for the avoidance of confusion, I spoke to two people who had posted ads in GumTree and one is a female E.... and the other was a male E.... The one I went to was the female one. So what do you know that I don't???

EDIT:
Actually, I keep hearing about these Rory Gallacher tributes for some reason and TBH, I haven't got a clue who the guy is or was.

The reason I was asking about the band was a couple of months ago I was looking for something to keep me busy and I e mailed a girl called Emily and there seemed to be a guitarsit on board who played with a Rory tribute band. I think his name was/is Phil.
It never went any further than e mails but they seemed like decent people. I wish you all the best and mind and give me a shout when you are gigging and I will come down and give you pelters, I mean support.

Bingo.... the very same!! I haven't met the famous Phil yet, actually.

You must excuse me.... I'm originally from Yorkshire. So, even though I've lived in Scotland for 25 years, I'm not Scottish and by extension I don't wish I was Irish. Let the abuse begin
