Check the wires soldered to the pots and jack socket.
Carefully check the wires from the pickups, what pickups do you have? If one of the copper windings has broken then its a bit more tricky.
It may be something really simple like a wire come off the jack socket. Do you have a soldering iron?
If you're not confident with this stuff then you have to take it to a shop for a proper repair.

Yep. Setting fire to it is definatley the thing to do.

I had the exact same problem a few months back. Tracked it down to the little clip-on connector for the battery. Turned out one of the terminals on the connector had become loose. I removed the battery, and [i]very gently[/i], tightened the terminal with a small pair of pliers. Pop the battery back in, problem solved. :)
