Andyalfa Posted August 5, 2009 Share Posted August 5, 2009 I swap between my passive P and a Stagg electric upright with an active pre-amp. Both go through my Ashdown ABM. I use the passive/active button and the flat/shape button then swap instruments via an A/B foot switch. In a gig situation, that seems to manage the job fairly well. Both instruments sound so different to each other, slight variations in EQ don’t make a great deal of difference as far as the audience is concerned. And I also use a 4 string Wal bass on a couple of down-tuned numbers and that is as loud as the Deluxe V, if not louder, so it can be and has been a real problem trying to keep levels consistent.. In a nutshell, the Deluxe V has an EBS pre-amp in it and is so much louder than the RBV that it causes me monitoring problems when I switch basses during a gig and the levels into the band's PA are affected too.. I've tried a number of different approaches to getting around it .. I've got a Zoom B2 Pedal and that works well for controlling the volume difference .. but it does add some noise to the signal chain which isn't ideal really. I also have an Aphex exciter and that does help to provide an eq boost, but that on it's own doesn't solve the problem because the volume differential is so great. The Boss LS-2 line selector I had worked pretty well though because it provides a 2 channel facilty with the ability to boost and/or cut the volume on each channel quite drastically! Now though, I can use the 2 channels on the Eden Metro to get around the problem without having to many problems.. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Inspired by the posts here I took my spare bass to rehearsal last night and tried it for the first run through. Sound was fine, but the neck felt wrong, then the body heft was wrong (who put that horn in my chest?), I was stuck in second gear... Once I'd gone back to my Spea the sound was suddenly better and playing more fun. It's probably familiarity. Like meeting up with an old girlfriend and wondering what you ever saw in her.
