I'm genuinely curious when this running gag started?

The first appearance of the phrase on Basschat was 2009, but it was a serious enquiry.

Incidentally, the search function is crap when looking for a phrase - it doesn't search for the phrase, which is a fairly fundamental requirement of searching for a phrase.

This. It was a thing when I joined TB in 2007.

That's some serious mileage. I've even seen it pop up when discussing pickguard colours.

My guess, it started as a joke and is still used in fun, but has morphed into a dig, probably shorthand for "You're taking this too seriously!"

When JB fired Bootsy he was escorted from the building. Looks like he left the bass behind and Fred used it from then on.

It was a bass bought by the band, for the band. Not the actual property of BC.

Interesting reading the provenance stating the bass was given as a gift to the present owner after he put up the band for a night and bought bus tickets for them to get home after JB abandoned them during the tour.

Sounds like standard JB behaviour
