Hi Basschat family – I'm a new bassist, looking to learn and connect!

Hi everyone,

I'm new to Basschat and really excited to get to know the bass community here. I've been playing bass for about 2 years now, mostly 4-string electric bass, and I really like funk/jazz/rock.

A few things about me:

Current gear: Ibanez SR300 bass + small practice amp

Goals: improve technique, especially groove, slap & fingerstyle

Current challenges: sometimes having trouble setting up strings + need advice on choosing bass strings that suit my style

I'm looking forward to learning from experienced bassists here — if anyone has experience setting up bass, choosing strings, or how to practice groove effectively, I'd love your advice. Also, I'd love to jam, share experiences, or listen to your music projects if you need a bassist.

Nice to meet you all!

I think you’ll find about 10000 people who can help you with exactly that . Some are professional luthiers

Probably not going to get in-person help given your location though some members are in US (@bluewine is only a couple of hours away by ferry)

Welcome

I’ll give you a piece of advice from my own store of not-that-naturally-gifted. Put your bass to one side and find a funky drum beat on the net.

Make up your own bass line in your head - if you sit there with a bass you might find something by luck and you might not.
if you dream the baseline in your head, you’ll know where the notes fit in the pattern when you pick up the bass. Try and find any one of them and play it in the right place, then add more one or two at a time.

some people can just riff this kind of thing off instantly. Sadly I’m not one of them and I find this way easier

Literally just decided I wanted to play today. Got some weirdo johnson second hand from my mom and a beat up mysterious amp from a pawn shop. No idea where to start and was hoping y'all had advise.

Welcome FP.

One piece of advice whether you intend to learn score or not is that this -

- is a treble clef.

This -

- is a bass clef.

(Notes for bass guitar are written on the bass clef but an octave higher than the intended pitch).
