Homatron Posted November 7 Posted November 7 I've been dreaming of picking up the double bass for a long time, but had been writing it off for various reasons. So imagine my surprise when my wife organised this for a big birthday this week! Ā Ā Currently renting for a few months to see if we can live with it, but I now can't imagine a world without DB... it's so addictive and rewarding! Ā It seems playing cello as a kid, and fretless bass for a long time has helped get me started, but there's so much to learn! 13 Quote

itu Posted Tuesday at 17:27 Posted Tuesday at 17:27 Now that's a lovely present! Any bass is a journey of a lifetime. I see you have many songbooks made out of glass, the start is most likely pretty easy.Ā 1 Quote
Homatron Posted Wednesday at 10:04 Author Posted Wednesday at 10:04 Thanks @itu, I'm definitely seeing this as a lifelong journey, and will take my inspiration from all sorts of vesselsĀ š 1 Quote
JPJ Posted Wednesday at 22:22 Posted Wednesday at 22:22 Congratulations and welcome to the (addictive) club. The best advice I can offer is get help with hand / body position before you start to bake in problems that can even result in permanent injury. If thereās no tutors near you, then thereās some great advice for free from Discover Double Bass on YouTube. That said, Iām sure your cello experience will come in useful š 1 1 Quote

Homatron Posted yesterday at 11:25 Author Posted yesterday at 11:25 Thanks for the adviceĀ @JPJĀ & @Burns-bass. I'm certainly not offended!Ā Ā I don't have a tutor (not sure if there are any in Plymouth) but an experienced/trained friend of a friend has offered to give me some pointers. Looking forward to that in the next week or so. Ā I'm taking it slow and steady, referring to Discover Double Bass and other resources to keep me on track. Ā Currently loving playing over an F blues! Ā No pressure thenĀ š Ā I hadn't appreciated double bass players would be so in demand. I've been invited to a couple of jams so will see where that goes once I feel ready. Quote
