Why has an in-line P pickup never been made? I know that Nordstrand make the Big Split, but that is an overwound split coil jazz pickup. Great sounding pickup, but not a precision sound? Nordstrand also make a Big Rig - 2 offset 50's style P pickups in a single casing... but still not an in-line P.

I can't think of another manufacturer who makes anything that comes close?

I read that the precision coils are too fat, so that you cannot put them side by side? But that sounds like Internet logic 🤔

I had a ‘51 P pickup that comprised two coils side by side. It was made by a guy in Spain: Jess Loureiro. You could wire them in series, or parallel on a DPDT switch, which I tried. It was pretty pointless TBH. It sounded thin and horrible in parallel IMO but great in series.

P.S. Now I think about it; not totally pointless because it was pretty hum free.

Only one pole piece per string = more space!

The pickups on my Maruszczyk J type are Delano JSBC 4 HE/M2 (catchy name), split coil humbuckers and the neck pickup sounds just like my P Bass.

EMG makes P pickups in a DC (dual coil) case. I also remember that Ibanez and few other manufacturers in the 80's had P pickups in a humbucker case. I think @Bassassin could list all of them.

(EMG widths, as everybody knows, are 3.5" - 4.5".)

Probably not all of them! I do know Aria's MB range of pickups used in the SB, RSB, TSB etc basses did include P-style coils in a soapbar case. Some even had exposed poles.
