Hello from Glossop and the High Peaks.

Absolute beginner, mid fifties. Been wanting to give the Bass a go for a while. Just finished a Masters so I now have the time. My fingers feel like sausages on the frets but looking forward to beginning this odyssey. I'm wondering how many hours of practice a day I will need to be competent not expert? Currently murdering ant tune on a Yamaha RBX 270 in the right hands it sounds fantastic.

Read, ask loads of questions, post pictures of your bass. 

 

The fat fingers usually goes away. Didn't in my case but you should be fine. 

 

Not been to Glossop for ages, was brought up in Chesterfield but loved the peak district

There is no set amount of time, or even rule of thumb. Natural talent takes you further and in less time. Those less blessed (me) need to practice things till you can’t get them wrong. I’d suggest a teacher to help you over the rocky bits

Theres nothing worse than learning beginner bad habits by trying to figure it out yourself and making your bass life so hard that you end up with hand or shoulder pain, or just as bad, discouraged 

I wish I’d had an early lesson or two

How long have you been playing, have you worked out any bad habits now?
