tauzero Posted August 12 Posted August 12 Clear or no scratchplate (what's this ghastly "pickguard" word?). Scratchplates are an abomination and a monstrosity created so Leo Fender could do all the routing from the front and save money, then perpetuated by Ernie Ball and then by most of the FSO and FakeRay builders. 1 2 Quote

AlexDelores Posted 17 hours ago Author Posted 17 hours ago Well, I finally got the Pickguard/scratchplate/Bit of clear plastic off (whatever it’s called)… I like it a lot. I might try the card trick as mentioned by @ezbass with some black card to see how it looks down the line but I do like it off for now. Got to say, I’m really enjoying this bass. The neck is superb! It’s a joy to play. As previously mentioned, the tone doesn’t blow me away and I’ll likely swap out the pickups in the future for something with more ‘growl’, but it does have its own unique sound, albeit a little reserved. I’ve committed myself to learn to read music this year outside of my gig stuff. And, I’m getting half decent. But, after getting this, it’s been like starting again. But, I’m really enjoying the process of learning, by forcing myself to fret more notes rather than open strings which is helping me familiarise with the B string more. Anyway, life story over, this thing is cool! 2 Quote
lemmywinks Posted 5 hours ago Posted 5 hours ago For a cheap but excellent high output J pickups with plenty of growl check out the Wilkinson WOJB5 with ceramic magnets, resistance is 9.40k for the neck and 10.4k for the bridge. I have a set in one of my basses and they are extremely rude: https://www.vansonguitars.com/products/wilkinson-m-series-wojb5-bass-neck-bridge-pickup-set-for-5-string-jb-type-guitars-jazz-set They do an alnico set for a small premium with more traditional readings. Not a great deal of choice at the budget end if you play a 5 string, Tonerider ignore us and Entwistle only do a vintage set but Warman Stealth might be worth a look if you want a hotter pickup. 1 Quote

Thanks. I’ll take a look. Down the line I think I’ll try a few different sets and see what I land on. I’m just trying to enjoy it as it is at the moment but I’ll get round it at some point. That said, i think I said the same thing about my Jazz Bass and I’ve still not changed them. I bought that in 2003 😅 Quote
