I've read that some people set their Rik basses up with no relief in the neck

My HW has little relief and rattles a bit. Is this part of the clank that we all desire

It plays really nice but if I dig in, (and I do, especially playing Jam songs) it gets a bit messy

The bass is literally brand new ( I only ordered it 4 weeks ago) and will probably settle a bit, I have no prblem adjusting truss rods etc

your thoughts please

As you both say, the clank is part and parcel of "the sound", especially when you dig in.

My HW is a single truss rod, so a bit easier to adjust. Yes, making sure that the strings don't choke is important, having a little neck relief is great, but just making sure it's playable is the big thing.

Flat neck and clank is absolutely normal. It’s all part and parcel of the Ricky experience. Especially when playing with a plectrum.

Embrace it, Enjoy it!
