P Bass Neck experts

Hi folks I wonder if anyone has some advice. I have a Classic P Bass like the Vintera it’s got a really thick neck. I love it but i simply can’t play some things on it. I was looking to either just think this bass is good for these tunes and not for these or potentially buy a jazz conversion neck. However a bloke locally is selling a 2009 mim maple precision neck. Which is 42 mm I don’t know the neck profile. I have a couple of jazz basses and the necks are much thinner but I really find my stingray(s) to be the most comfortable and they are thicker than the Jazz basses necks. Would a 2009 mim p bass neck be noticeably thinner than the mim 50s classic (vintera) P neck?

It is thinner by about 2mm, but the necks of that range are also quite shallow which can make a fair difference in the feel.

I'm really interested in the 50s Vintera p bass, looks really cool and in general I like a chunky neck. I currently have the player P bass and that neck feels great, I think I can handle a chunkier neck but your post makes me nervous....is it really unwieldy ?

Hi Quilly for 99% of the stuff I do it's absolutely brilliant and I don't have a problem. Just literally one track I play I find it hard to play a particular run. It is a beautiful bass and sounds fantastic. In many ways the chunky neck actually kind of makes me play in a slightly different way which is cool.  I've never had a p bass before and I love it but I am thinking of letting it go and buying another P with a thinner neck just for this one track But it would make me sad as I think it look and sounds perfect!

I usually prefer a J neck and had a go on a MK1 Vintera 50s P Bass in a shop. I went in thinking I'd hate it, but was surprised by how much I liked the neck. I found it to be quite thin back to front and pretty playable.

 

AFAIK, the biggest differences you'll likely notice between the Player and Vintera neck are....

 

- The Vintera has a gloss neck vs satin on the Player

- The Vintera has a vintage (narrow & tall frets) vs med jumbo on the Player

- The Vintera has a smaller radius (so more curved) fretboard

 

All of which I like and would lead me to pick a Vintera over a Player. Both are lovely necks though.
