I would recommend a multi pedal.   I had a bass specific one which had fuzz, overdrive, distortion, phaser, chorus and delay.   All the effects were great and no worry with power or connectivety

I had one made for me by the (now defunct) Bad Penny company. 

It's a mess of boosts and fuzzes in a beautifully designed and crafted box.
