Unexpected bassists

This may be old news to some, but in a rare departure from its usual parade of the annoying and irrelevant, Facebook's suggestion algorithm popped this on to my feed: Jona Lewie doing You'll Always Find Me In The Kitchen At Parties on TV in 1980 featuring a very fresh-faced Kirsty MacColl on Precision and BV's.

For some reason the fact she's using the came-in-the-box Fender strap is especially charming 😊

(Note for younger or overseas listeners: Jona Lewie is known for releasing two songs 43 years ago, one was quite good, this is the other one.)

As truly awful as that song is, anything with Kirsty on it is good to see.  So sad that she was killed in such a horrible way and that justice has been perverted.

Love you, Kirsty.

I prefer the other one! ie, this one. You don't find lines like "This was at some do in Palmers Green" anywhere you know

I would say 'on' is subjective.  Holding, more like.

Given the pop sensibilities of your average Runaround audience, KM could just as easily have just danced around in the background.

She turned up on lots of backing vocals of the period as I recall, she had various issues with record Co's, Stiff records certainly, which did her no favours and stalled her own efforts somewhat... her boyfriend was Steve Lillywhite who got her a whole bunch of backing singer work etc I believe.

Jona Lewie was also Mr Terry Dactyl of the dinosaurs. I had the privilege of honking some tenor sax at the end of their not-hit ‘On a Saturday Night’ - (well mixed down in the final cut) whereas the bass player was up front and centre - my pal Malcolm Starr on a vintage..... Sousaphone!

Yes, she was basically stuffed by Stiff records, but Lilywhite got her on more or less anything he worked on that needed a female backing.

Sometimes what happens in Palmers Green should have stayed in Palmers Green.
