Is British rock and metal now a cottage industry?

Probably more due to lack of choice than anything. It's not like there were loads of top name rock and metal bands available in the UK to choose from.

I think the whole festival was put together in a really short amount of time and all of the bands did it for free, which probably contributed to the lack of bigger bands too.

While that's true, other than the veteran Brit bands I originally mentioned, over the last decade or so the big draws at Download have been US bands and a number from non-English speaking countries.
