Didn't these first pop up in the 90's, when fashion did a handbrake turn from sleek super-guitars and rack rigs to all thing vintage and valvey?

It certainly makes me think of that 90s revival of 60s aesthetics, like Pop flares, lava lamps in Woolworths etc...
