How do you think they compete with all the internet stuff , Personal Service , offering set ups ?

From my point of view, they can't compete on price (fairly obviously) but I did sell a bass through our local second hand shop and although I didn't get as high a return as if I had sold it privately, it got the bass out of the house right away, I didn't have to deal with stupid hagglers and chancers, I didn't have to worry about packaging and courier-proofing the bass and of course got personal service and updated about how the sale was going - number of enquiries/people trying it out etc. so I guess it depends entirely upon if you value your time or if the bottom line is the only consideration. I hope they thrive, they sometimes have some cool stuff - it does heavily lean towards guitars rather than basses, but that's just standard.

At the same time , I was in a music shop a little bit away from my house trying out my status post setup. ( the place I use for setups as chandlers take weeks )

Guy comes in with a rather nice PRS SE Kingfisher , Hardcased , its bit over year old, Includes receipt from Andertons and all the finance gubbinz for around 700 odd quid. The' guys a drummer, who bought it for some recording and is now leaving the country for a cruise ship gig .
Best the shopkeep could offer the guy was 150 quid , cash final offer .... he didnt really want it " felt it would sit in the store " The guy took it >.<

Its not my place to judge, / get in the way of a free market forces BUT OUCH , thats gotta sting.

Hi Musicman, Yes I'm in Sale so a frequenter of all the South Manchester shops. I bought a Marshall DSL40 over at Sounds Great in the last three weeks. Great service and stock over there.

Right near me then! I'm towards the Alty end but still Sale...nice place. Only been here about 20 months but feel sure me and our lass will stick around and buy at some point. Best of both worlds....big city very close by, smaller town feel in Sale and Alty.

Dawsons in Alty is nice, the ones in Chester and Leeds are good too. PMT in Leeds is a bit lame for Bass, there are a few small random shops about, but you've almost as much chance finding something bargainous in the pawn/payday loan shops on the high street.

Years ( and I mean 30-40!) ago I used to work in Leeds and always made a point of going out the office at lunchtime to look around the second-hand shops. Lots of bargains to be had but at the time I had only just started working. Having looked at a Jaydee Supernatural Roadie for maybe 9 months in the shop window next to the Duchess and seen it come down in price from £500 to £400 got it for £300 and a trade in of a combo I'd won! He wasn't keen to take it out the window as he reckoned I was a tyre kicker and those windows were stuffed with gear. Also I sold a 1962 Gibson EB2 in another one for £150!
Also remember trying an old Jazz Bass at £150 in a s/h shop which was very battered and possibly not genuine..that was enough money at the time (late 70's) to not risk the punt, given the lack of sites like this at the time ( or even the net)!
