I must be missing something here but the seller seems adamant it is a Jazz bass despite the very clear image of the headstock!

Irrespective of what it is I reckon it is a pretty good price for one of these now

Its traditionally neither, but of course there's tons of variations of both Precision and Jazz out there including Precisions with PJ two pickup configuration, and both without scratchplate etc. For me personally, the offset body shape and the neck profile would define a Jazz (and I think it would need 2 pickups too) and a Precision would need a thicker neck profile and a split single coil pickup at the front, otherwise its a hybrid of some kind or only possesses part of the features of that bass.

These retailed for about £400 around the early noughties before Fender morphed them into another name. The resell prices are horrendous so he'll be lucky to get what he's asking. I had a deluxe version with the 3-band eq and it was an excellent bass.

I remember when these came out, I think that BIN price is actually pretty good.

Bass direct have a earlier version of this bass selling at £750! http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Fender_Jazz_Bass_Special_red.html

The neck and bridge is different but the body (and I suspect the electronics) is the same....
