How much makes up an original bass?

A couple of years ago I bought an advertised 1973 Precision with an refinished neck from a well known purveyor of bass equipment. I thought it was time to check and document it so today I've had the neck off and had a look at the stamps and pots. So what date do the Fender experts reckon this is?

Neck has the name David stamped on the heel.

I paid good money for this on the basis that it was a 1973. I think I've been conned.

I'm no expert, but according this article, I date your neck as a 1973

http://www.vintagerocker.com/fender/neck_dates.html
01 - Precision Bass
03 - Maple board
24 - Week 24
3 - 1973
3 - Tuesday

Also, based on the serial 1377310, your pots appear to be CTS pots manufactured in 10th week of 1973.

Hope this helps!

Using: http://www.ggjaguar.com/neckcode.htm

01 - p bass
03 - fretted maple neck OR skunk stripe neck with rosewood board
24 - week 24
3 - 1973
3 - Wedsnesday

Looks legit for a '73 p bass neck.

Thanks guys. I can relax and just enjoy its great tone with a new set of Rotosounds.

Dave, I read through this and I'm happy that there's a decent outcome and you weren't sold a dud. That said (look, I want to be the voice of reason here), from first post ('conned') to final ('relax and enjoy it's great tone') took barely 25 hours. Did it not have great tone yesterday or does the knowing it's of the determined vintage as sold make you like it more so?

Actually it's always played well and sounded good which is why I bought it in the first place. The questioning of originality would never have occurred had I not taken the neck off to check as I was changing the strings. I should probably have done it sooner, but hey, we're never too old to learn.

I've not used Rotosound strings for years however it was Billy Sheehan, I think, at the Bass Guitar Show, who commented that the majority of hit records had been made with Fender Precisions strung with Rotosound strings. I thought I'd give them a try and I'm not disappointed.
