Master blaster Posted July 30, 2008 Share Posted July 30, 2008 Hey, in my old amp (hartke HA3500) i had a built in compressor. I no longer have this amp as im now using a GK 700RB. This amp doesn't have the compressor built in like the other and im kinda wanting one to use. I was wondering if any of you guys would be able to advise me on whats good. Any help? Fraktal Posted July 30, 2008 Share Posted July 30, 2008 Well, I would recommend you to use an optical compressor, they tend to sound much more transparent and responsive than classical compressors. I think I have seen some enthusiastic reviews of APHEX 1404 Punch Factory, wich is a pedal... If you prefer a rack, there are dozens of optocompressors with that format! PS: Do you really miss a compressor? I havent used one for more than 7 years and I found I love to play with the dinamic to boost my expresivity, also Im pretty sure the bass defines a lot better through the PA since I give it some time to "breathe" between notes and release some burden from the subwoofer power amps. dave_bass5 Posted July 30, 2008 Share Posted July 30, 2008 Having owned a punch Factory and now a BBE Opto-stomp i would say the PF is not much good. Yes, its transparent but thats because its not doing a lot IME. The Opto-stomp seems to make much more of a difference. I use it to just even out my pick and finger playing, not as an effect and where as i thought the PF was doing a good job i could never really tell if it it was on or not, and thats not because its transparent but because truing it on or off made little difference unless it was turned right up. I went from a Hartke HA5500 to a GK 700RB II as well and missed the compressor. I bought a Tapco Squeez rackmount compressor. Not too expensive and really liked it. I found I could go from the 'is it doing anything' to squished up to the max. Since I've gone for the single coil P bass sound I find I don't need it so its sitting in my other rack ready to go up for sale in the next few days.
