any suggestions on a simple system for live recording, just a cuppla mics into something or other, i'm looking to buy a cheapish system, CD & DAT recorders still look expensive, Laptop will get nicked as soon as i plug it in, how about mics?
Just for practice / reference purpouses right? I've heard you can get a mic attachment for the newer iPods which is pretty decent for that kind of thing..

If it's for anything more than practice/reference material, you'll need a system that can take way more than just a couple of mics.

Some sort of stereo recorder (2 channel minimum) with two PZM microphones, one each side of the room. Have used that set-up many times and the overall sound is highly credibleand useful for listening back to a performance (although not good enough to release commercially - unless Jaco is on it, then you can release ANYTHING, however crap it sounds).

If you're looking for more mic inputs I think the best option around is the Fostex MR8-HD

It has 4 separate mic inputs so you can record 4 independent tracks at the same time then mix them down later. Many of these recorders only have 1 or at best 2 mic inputs so the 4 inputs gives you an extra level of control.

The MR8HD has a hard drive for storing data. There's also a cheaper Fostex MR8 Mk2 that uses Compact Flash cards instead, but is otherwise the same machine.

Dead easy to use.
We use the Tascam DR-1... it's a hell of a bit of kit! It seems to cope with all sorts of levels thrown at it, and the clarity is amazing for what it is.

I'll see if I have any clips at home and post an example.
just got a DR-1, any chance of some tips on settings to record live gig please?

limiter on/off/auto?

I would have the limiter on but a low input level, and record to wav if you have the memory to fit the file in.
