If I remember rightly from my eBay trading days, this is a trick whereby increasing the price beyond what anyone would pay allows you to keep a long-standing listing going if you're temporarily out of stock. Pulling the listing and re-listing it again would lose the valuable search engine advantages that have been accrued on that particular URL, from eBay and from Google.
