My next dilemma: Does it make more sense to spend £200 - £250 on a new Squier VMP TB or a secondhand Fender MIM Precision? Any thoughts? OutToPlayJazz Posted June 21, 2008 Share Posted June 21, 2008 One of my pupils just got a Thunderbird for his birthday & it's a really nice sounding bass. Very Precision-like thump to it. Just bloody huge & difficult to get a hard case for. Plays really well also. The Squiers as you'll have heard/read are getting better & better these days. I've had two of the VMJ's (fretted 70's & fretless) & they're really good basses. Also to consider is the hideous looking Pete Wentz Precision model. That one really has a great sound & is excellent value. The other one definitely worth considering along with the BB414 is the Yamaha BB614 with the 3-band active pre on board. Tait Posted June 21, 2008 Share Posted June 21, 2008 theres two VMPs. theres the telebass one and the white one. i've only ever heard good things about the VMJ and the squier telebass VMP, i've never played either, so they might be worth a look. the thunderbird is a lovely bass, i was going to get one before i got my ibanez, but i went for the ibanez instead. for that price you wont go wrong with a thunderbird. but, as OTPJ says, they might be hard to get a hardcase for. i'd say play them all first, go with what you like best. i don't know where you're from, but someone might be able to tell you if any music shops near you have any of these basses in. Seems like the VMJ has a slightly narrower neck than the VMP, so I'm favouring the VMP. What's the difference between the VMP and the VMP "TB"? I can get a TB for £209. budget bassist Posted June 21, 2008 Share Posted June 21, 2008 It's mainly looks, and a different pickup, i'm not sure exactly, a normal VMP will sound just like a beefed up precision, whereas i think the tele sounds a bit thicker... possibly, i'm not too sure. I considered the VMP, but the VMJ has a very nice neck. Also there are sites on the net where you can get a VMJ for £200, type it in on google products. OutToPlayJazz Posted June 24, 2008 Share Posted June 24, 2008 Hmmm... VM TB or Mex? Depends on what style you play. If you play any funk or slap at all, you don't want the tele bass. Any bass with the pickup right up against the neck is zero good for slap playing. The TB is designed for a warm fuzzy 60's sound, whereas the Mex Precision is much more of an all rounder.
