wmsheep Posted May 18, 2007 Share Posted May 18, 2007 Hi all Right, I`m looking at buying a second hand bass at the moment (not saying what in case it falls through!!). Obviously, as it`s the best part of 20+ years old it`s going to need some work done to bring it up to scratch. As far as I can see, the 3 options are 1) Renovation; Bass is stripped down and taken back to the condition it was the day it left the factory using, wherever possible, original or original specification hardware. 2) Overhaul; Everything is checked and if it needs replacing, then new hardware installed 3) Total update; Everything that can get replaced IS replaced with brand new state of the art stuff. Definitely sounds like an ambitious project, are you going to do the whole lot yourself? wmsheep Posted May 18, 2007 Author Share Posted May 18, 2007 OK, looking at things, I think the "Total update/Replace all" option would be fairly cost prohibitive for the amount that I want to spend on the bass in the first place - to be honest it was always going to be a final option. It`s probably going to be the same for the first option too; I say probably as I`m still trying to find out about availability & cost of original parts for replacement. R,5,R,5... Posted May 19, 2007 Share Posted May 19, 2007 Well, naturally it depends on the quality of the bass to begin with. A 20 year old Galveston might not warrant extravagant spending. But since you seem to be thrilled with the potential acquisition, I guess it's a good'un. Furthermore, what you do with it depends on what you want to get out of it. A playable bass? A collector's item? In most cases, I believe I would go for option 2, but as I say it will very much depend on the bass and your needs.
