looking good, cant wait to see this painted. any idea what sort of colour scheme or whatever your sisters going to paint it?
I've had some initial ideas sent to me, but I'm leaving it up to her to decide. One thing I have stipulated is that the design be reprised on the headstock. Should look pretty good.

As promised, the battery box has been routed out. Took an extra night because I made a template with a small router bit in mind, only to find that it wasn't deep enough! Oops. Start again. This time I nailed it:

I went a little slow with the router and scorched the wood somewhat, not important this time but something to bear in mind in future. As the more eagle-eyed readers may already know there's more to this body than meets the eye - a different kind of wood for the core and a cap either side. Core wood didn't like being routed much, particularly in the long direction. Left a furry kind of edge that wouldn't clean up with multiple passes of the router. It was happier at the fastest router speed. Any idea what wood does this? Basswood? Agathis?

Anyway, only priming left to do, then it's over to you sis.

Sorry, I've been a lazy bum. I've primed the headstock and given the neck to my sis. In the process of priming the body. I'm brush painting - too cold for spraying up here - and it's a laborious, boring, mind numbing and frustrating process, I have to sand half of what I just painted to get the brush strokes out - basically I suck at painting. Also been sidetracked by adding active electronics to my OLP MM3 - naughty!

However, I've been thinking lately about how I've been really neglecting my playing and spending too much time acquiring gear and pottering about in the workshop. So I'm going to get this to my sister for painting, then I'm suspending all current project work (apart from refinishing the Hagstrom for a mate - no access to spray booth, waiting for warmer weather) in favour of getting some playing done. Organising a jam with a guitarist friend so that should help.

The slabs of wood and various hardware I've collected won't melt or decompose if I leave them for a few months :)

I'm glad I stumbled across this thread, it's inspired me to do something with an old Squier Strat body I have festering under the bed. It's not a bass though, would a guitar build diary allowed on here :) ? A question though. Where can I get spray primer from? Is it a B&Q-able thing?

Oops, didn't notice this post. Sorry.

Well I can't speak for B&Q stuff, but I've been recently using the nitrocellulose lacquers from Steve Robinson (Manchester Guitar Tech) and I have to say I've been impressed so far - just been clear coating necks at the moment, but it's gone on so easy that I don't suppose his other lacquers will be any different.

Remember though - GET A MASK and make sure your work area is well ventilated.

Quite alright, I haven't actually looked at this recently, just a coincidence that you replied yesterday and I wanted to check the progress of this build today! Are the Steve Robinson lacquers expensive? And how hard are they to get hold of? My flatmate announced the other day he's moving out in the next month so he's kinda leaving us in the sh*t rent-wise so money may be a bit tight for a while.

£15 a can + £5 flat postage. For a body you'll need 3 cans - primer, colour, clear top coat. Site has all the colour swatches and some examples of his and customer's work.
Cheers for that! £50 though? Might have to wait a while til I can scrape together the necessary funds. How difficult would you say it was to refinish a guitar? Is there a certain process you go through? Sorry for the thread hijack!
I haven't embarked upon a body refinish yet. However, the general theory is - sand it smooth - I've been going to 600 grit before painting which based upon things I've heard may be a little excessive - then depending upon the wood grain filler, then primer, colour coat, clear top coat.

MGT has a good pictorial about putting together a kit guitar which goes into some nice detail about the finishing:
that looks emense, I hate clear scratchplates on 'ray's but my god it looks amazing on this.

cant wait to see the finnished product.
I will crack on with this once I get back from holiday. I've been ignoring the body's baleful, half-primed stares from the cupboard for too long :)

That's the front and the back sanded. I'm reasonably pleased with the surface that my sis will have to paint upon. The sides are proving a little more difficult - the paint has not been applied evenly, and I've sanded through a couple of places :) Well, live and learn.

Brush painted? Wouldn't it have been easier to spray it then just smooth it off with 800 grit, rather than wet sand it?

Either way, I can't wait to see what your sister will do to it.

Yes, it would have been easier. But it was a case of "I've started so I'll finish". Good practice to try other things anyway.

what did you end up putting in the control cavity? are you leaving the SP so you can see into it or is your sister going to paint the inside of the scratchplate over the cavitys???

eaither way its going to look sick. cant wait to see what your sis paints on it.

The sanding is complete and the body will be delivered to my sister this week. Thank heavens for that. I'll be quite happy if I don't see that piece of wood for a while :)

For the next while, delays are no longer my fault!

Not as yet. Thanks for the reminder, I'll have to mention it to her next time I see her.
