Got an old Ashdown Mag 1x15 cab i only paid £50 for, with a blown speaker, (well its distorting anyway, and when i press down on it the distortion goes)
Anyone got any advice where to get a replacement speaker for this? and how much am i looking at?
Like for like Ashdown replacement speaker, or celestion/eminence etc?
Thanks

Check with Ashdown first. Their replacement parts are reasonably priced (I'm guessing at £40 for a replacement speaker) and you'll maintain the resale value of your cab. If you decide to fit something else, a used one from eBay is probably your best bet. Don't fit an Eminence Beta 15 - they're rubbish.

Obviously it'll depend on what amp you're putting thru it - whether it's working alone or with another cab & a host of other variables. But as a ballpark idea I bought Eminence Delta 15"s from Maplins. At the time the shops stocked them, I believe it's now online only, but expect around £60 for one of those. Each one was 400watts max at 8ohms.

Long before then I had a Laney 60w practise amp with a 10" speaker. It blew very soon after buying - an own brand speaker with no headroom. I bought a Celestion 100watt speaker, direct from Celestion over the phone & it was the bollox. They were very helpful & offered good advice. Too long ago for the price to be relevant now (read as "I can't remember")

PS. You may get replies talking about the essential relevance of the volume of your cab, porting, the material etc etc. before any answer is worth giving.

If it is the 15 that is the same size as a 2x10 with two round ports in it, the agree OK with the Eminence Kappalite 3015 although you can't push it to full excursion without the ports chuffing, that is still plenty loud. Line it with knobbly foam whilst its open though.

Wow thanks all of you for your great input! very much appreciated!
I think a replacement speaker is looking fave at moment tho....from what ive read will probably be better than the Ashdown one.
Would just want a middle of range one, so maybe 50 odd quid should cover a half decent one? Not bothered about resale value tho.
And i plan to eventually use this with a 4x10 cab when one comes up at the right price, for biggger gigs.
By the way, im going thru an Ashdown ABM 500 head

Unless you know how to match up a chassis with a cab I would go with the Specific Ashdown replacement. It may not be the best chassis ever but it will suit the cab dims so unless you know better, I wouldnt just slot anything in there.
I did this with NEO's and it didn't work Afaiwc.....
Just my 2p...

Thanks all you guys for your input! Have sorted this out now tho.

I decided to get a replacement speaker, as Ashdown didnt have any in stock until the end of month.

For future Forum reference, the Ashdown blue line, 200 watt Mag 1x15 speaker was going to be £57 + vat, + 7 p&p. Didnt think it was too bad a price, but just couldnt wait until they got stock.

I went for an Eminence Delta, 15LF 8 ohm, 500 watt in the end, so fitted it in now, and it sounds great! That cost me £70 delivered.
