TRBboy
The Glockenklang preamps in my Sandbergs have true passive bypass (will work with no battery), and the 2-band versions in the California basses have a passive tone control too. If you have the eq set flat on the Glock, there is no volume or tone difference between active and passive. I agree with most of what everyone else has said, and I think it does vary a lot between different instruments. I personally think of the active eq just as more control over the sound, rather than it being "louder". I think that hot passive pickups (like Dimarzios) can actually give the impression of being louder, just because they sound more aggressive and "raw". BigRedX
That isn't really what I was asking. There seems to be a big deal made about active pickups like EMG but AFAICS they are just normal coils and magnets pickups that happen to have a pre-amp and buffering circuit encased in the pickup housing instead of it being with the tone shaping circuitry as it is in most pre-amps. Just had a look on the EMG site and the various circuit options. It's a bit difficult to see exactly what is going on and what extra circuitry is attached to bottom of the pots along with tags for the solderless connections, but the difference to me looks like a question of electrical component distribution rather than anything else. xgsjx
Could Active pickups be designed for passive basses that have enough room to squeeze a battery in there to power them, but not enough room to fit active circuitry? To change the battery in the Ibby, I had to take the backplate off (4 screws).
LowdownRumble
Is it not worth buying a new battery compartment for a few quid to save you struggling with it?
It's just the lid that's messed up. If I could find somewhere to buy it I would consider it as I'm skint.

Besides, its not really a compartment, it's just a cut-out in the body with a lid on it.
