Sunless Saturday (Reality of My Surroundings)

I really like the sound Allan Dias got on PIL's "Rise". Great tune. :)
+1 for the song and bassline, but I think it was Bill Laswell who played it.

Alan Dias played some great lines with PIL too.

Ooh, I had no idea. It's a sweet sound either way.
+1000 - this is still one of the most incredible funk-rock anthems ever - Norwood's playing on this tune is immense - it's of my fave songs from the 90s - turn you speakers up and check this:
I don't think TheirTube likes it being embedded. Rocking tune though. It's hard to tell on a lot of other stuff whether Norwood's playing fretless or not - he's got such a honking bass tone.

Of course I didn't buy my Thumb because I saw Norwood playing one. That would be sa-ha-had. :)
thanks for that! this thread interested me because im getting into fretless bass, too. paul simonon's one of my fvaourite bass players, ill definatly give that album a listen.

EDIT: by the way, I've been playing a lot of red hot chilis stuff. i know flea dont play fretless, but songs like under the bridge, soul to squeeze and give it away sound good. scar tissue also sounds good but the really high bit's hard to get right.
I might be getting this wrong but I think Flea played fretless on Alanis Morrissette (sp) You oughta know. Certainly her regular bassist was sans frets on stage for that one.

I'll throw another into the mix - the bass player from Stump, can't remember his name. Used to use a Wal if I remember correctly. Responsible for classics such as 'Charlton Heston Keeps His Vest On' and 'Hoist the Levant'. The latter has an especially mad bass line. Absolutely brilliant!

'lights, camel, action'! Stump used to rule! - and they've had a slight resurgance in the last couple of weeks thanks to mr heston's demise!! apparently they have a best of album coming out this year too. probably not the longest CD in the world but seeing as i only ever had them on tape it may be worth a look..... or indeed a listen!

peace

Stuart Maconie played that on sunday's 6music Freakzone.

If You Have To Ask has both fretless and fretted bass on it, You Oughta Know is all fretless as is I Could Die For You, for starters.

I was wondering who played fretless bass on Bad Love by Eric Clapton - seems that's another Pino one!
+1 for bilbo suggesting Percy Jones, well worth checking out his approach and applying it to the rock side of things, the other chap that's also worth checking out is Mick Stevens.
Totally agree with both re: Percy Jones.

His 1990 CD 'Cape Catastrophe' is (for me) up there with the best Bass albums.
