home made cab

Do you have a fork lift truck?

edit: it would have to be very large, and heavily built so th epanels don't flex and make the sound muddy. If you want to use lots of big speakers, why not put each one into its own cabinet so you can stack as many as necessary for the occasion?

Don't waste your time with home made ideas, unless you are very very well versed in cabinet design. Bill has done all the work for you. Choose the plan, buy it for a couple of bucks, and build it yourself

I built my first ever bass cab. It housed a 15" Celestion driver and was made from 18" MDF. It was braced, glued and screwed and covered with rubber backed carpet tiles. I used all the lovely plastic corners from Maplin and the specs were, IIRC that magic ratio of something like 24x24x18.. (which sounds like I knew what I was doing, but infact I just copied the specs from a cab that had the same type of speaker in.. much easier.. that was many years ago.. think I was about 16 then.

Yeh, it's quite easy if you know what you are doing and can lay your hands on some basic power tools. I'd suggest looking at the Eminence designs and also errrr that bit of cab design software that I have flippin forgotten the name of...help me someone!

Just build one of Bill Fitzmaurices designs.

Build yourself two DR250's with switchable tweeters. You'll have a 2x10 lightweight stack the same height as an 8x10 and able to push just as much air.

A well designed 15" bottom is as much low end as you'll need for any indoor gig, a pair for outdoors. I modelled that PD 24" woofer a while back and was rather unimpressed - like many high power woofers it is highly damped which makes it less sensitive in the lower reaches. The only woofer I'd consider for bass guitar use is the Eminence Kappalite 3015LF - it has just the right balance of sensitivity, displacement, Fs and Qts, whilst being excellent value and very light. As a true woofer it does require a midrange speaker to take over from ~800Hz upwards.

I'm thinking along similair lines - needing an extension cab to compliment my Hartke combo (1 x 15 and 1 x 5).
I've been looking at BFM Omni's or perhaps another more standard 2x10 or 2x12 design as I've read on other forums a debate regarding wether or not the BFM bass horn style delivers any real advantages in smaller cabinets; the discussion got really technical and I was lost! Eminence speakers did seem to get the vote from all involved however.

I'm needing an 8 Ohm 350W cab really (hartke 3500 head) which I could stack on the combo.

Anyone else using a similair combination of speakers/cabs?
DIY or store bought?

What would be really handy is a big room with every kind of cab lined up, a pile of leads and amp heads so we could all go there and try everything out - DIY and factory cabs together. Anybody done that yet?

Let me guess: on one side those who have never seen, let alone heard, one of my cabs, but know all the answers, beating down the opinions of those who do own them. You don't have to be an engineer to figure out which of those groups has the more informed opinion.
But as to the question, if one did horn load a woofer in a cabinet with the same net volume as the average commercial 1x10 it wouldn't work. Therefore, I don't.
