OK then , I have had a go , I think I am at my limit , so I put up what I've done , I think it is an improvement on last months entry, and I have a few kind people to thank for pointing me in the right direction, whether I followed any of it however is for you to judge. I noticed the headphones comment earlier , headphones is all I have at the moment so that is my monitoring method, I guess that proper studio monitors are the way to go , but one step at a time Linky
Just had a listen to your mix Lurks. The separation of the instruments is definitely better than your previous mix and they have more space. The one thing you might have too much of in this track is reverb. By adding the amount of reverb you have you are pushing the instruments and vocal really far back in the mix. I too can only mix using headphones, but you can put your mix through any stereo and see if anything pops out as being problematic.

Hi Dave. No mastering required, just mixing.

Cheers lads. If your computer power is struggling, then I know that in logic you can freeze the track once you are done with it. It will then stop eating up your CPU. Not sure if this option is available in other DAWs though. Old G - the drums were recorded in a very large empty room, using not very good Mic technique. I'm happy for anyone to use samples if you want/need to. It also might not be a good idea to listen to the album version as it may sway your opinion of what it sounds like - but I'll leave that with you. Cheers Keith

Here is the link to download the Stems - https://dl.dropbox.c...Ray%20Stems.zip Any questions, feel free to ask away. Cheers Keith

Sorry for not contributing much in terms of discussion post mix, have been really busy this last week. I should have the stems for February's mix comp online either today or tomorrow at some point.

Voted too.

I've just done this but the other way around, but using audacity. I needed to reduce the speed of the track by 60% for a video we are doing at the weekend.
-
Wow, lots to read and take in. I'll post some comments of other people's mixes this afternoon. Cheers Keith

I'd just like to know how you got it so tight and polished sounding without putting anything on the overall mix.
-
Congratulations go to Si. It's also cool that the overall winners mix was preferred by Redstriper who submitted the track. Si, I'll email you a link for a digital download of our album mate for you to pick the next track. Now would be a good time to review each other's mix and suggest improvements and also spill the beans on the secrets of your mix. Cheers Keith

Hi Guys, If you are out in Manchester this Friday, my band Dientes are playing at the Drybar at 7:30. Here is a link to our tunes - http://dientes.bandcamp.com Would love to see some fellow basschatters in attendance. Cheers Keith

Ok fellas. Are we putting a closing date on this? I reckon we let it run up until the 24th so it leaves a week for comments and ideas to be posted. It also gives me a week to post the CD out to the winner.
I think the modern role of the mix engineer covers so much ground. At one end there's getting what has been recorded sounding as good as it possibly can, and then at the other extreme there's taking a recording and turning it into a potential hit single. Maybe future mix competitions should come with a brief from the person supplying the tracks as to what they would like the outcome of the mix to be?
Good point. I think a mix engineer tries to get everything sounding good, and a Producer turns it into a single using clever arrangement. I think most modern day engineers cover both of these roles. With regards to a brief being supplied, I think I'd prefer to to have a free reign on what the song should sound like, as it's only a bit of fun with the emphasis on learning. If this was a commercial mix, I'd rather know what the client was was expecting and aim the sound of the mix around their expectations. Cheers Keith

Hi Dan, We're going to be hopefully doing these once a month. Cheers Keith

Congrats man. We've just had our tracks listened to by the Manchester introducing team, so fingers crossed for us.

I'd be happy with that. We have an album coming out in the next few weeks and I'd happily donate a copy to the winner. They can then choose from one of the 10 tracks to mix for the comp? Cheers Keith
You want some free mixing do ya?! Ok sure,no problem
Haha, something like that.

Seeing as it was my idea to get this thing going, can i be cheeky and provide the tracks for the next tune?
-
Thanks for sorting this all out Si, much appreciated. Here is my final submission - https://soundcloud.com/butlerk02/2nd-chance

Sounding great mate, drummer is very tight indeed.
-
I'd say give it another week or so. I'm going to make some alterations to mine before I submit it if thats ok?
-
Some really nice mixes so far. Si and Skol, I really like how yours sound really tight and together. Si, personally, i think your snare is too up front for my tastes, but like you say, others may prefer this. Lurksalot, your mix could benefit from a bit more eq'ing to create a bit more space for everything in the mix. I've taken on board your comments Si and I'll have another soon.

Right then, still not 100% happy with this so comments are welcome : ) https://soundcloud.com/butlerk02/redstriper-1

Me too. I've spent a bit of time with this track already and i'm at the stage where i could do with some input from others. I'm happy to post it if that's ok? Or should i wait until Jan?
