1. That's the longest anyone's ever spent on one of those machines. Truefax.
2.
Touched a nerve
Possibly. Also just fed up of First World Problems.
3. A lot of this stuff sounds pretty reasonable cause for sadtimes... a lot of it just seems to be snobbish bitching; pretty much why I'm increasingly growing to hate the internet. Seriously, if the drummer wants to write a song or one of the band members actually has a life outside of the band and thus cannot commit to everything instantly: get the f**k over it... if you were so brilliant you'd be multi-platinum and doing magazine interviews not moaning on some forum.
4. Righto, now that I'm old and grumpy rather than young and angry I no longer really use my pointy Jackson V. It's a perfectly good guitar, but it just ain't me any more. 2002 model bought in early 2003, it's got an alder body with a black finish, maple neck with rosewood board and sharkfin inlays and Tune-O-Matic style bridge with through body stringing. The scale length is 25.5" and it comes loaded with Duncan Designed HB-103 humbuckers (basically the budget version of the Duncan Distortion so high output & ceramic magnets). The finish is slightly damaged on the bass side point, but nothing too drastic. Will consider trading for a bass cab of similar value. FREE TEA AND CAKE IF YOU COLLECT!
5. I used to get everything from local shops, now I get almost everything online in one capacity or other (online stores, eBay, forum sales, etc.). In general I want to support local businesses but frankly when said local businesses are putting 30%+ markups on everything from pots to cabs they can go f**k themselves.
6. I think the Jazz with the split coils looks awesome... *shrug* but then I'm a bit of a newbie to bass so what do I know?
7. Ah, okay... as you know I'm still learning all this stuff so had no idea there was more than one type of power handling.
8. Yeah, I'm not banking on this being a decent speaker... it's a no-label unit in a homemade cab. Sounds fine at bedroom volumes though (even if it is wired up using lawnmower flex!)
9.
Thermal power handling is never useful though.
Can you clarify that? As I understand it power handling is how you stop yourself blowing speakers up, which surely is a pretty useful thing.
10. Righto, having got the Cab ov Elvis off Nick and played through it a bit I took the driver out so I could find out what the power handling and impedance were as I figured they'd be useful to know when I get another cab... and there was no label anywhere that even hinted at these numbers. Is it possible for me to work the impedance out at home using a multimeter?
11.
Many shops will do you a discount from their price (RRP or not) if you can pay cash or lump sum.
The (now closed down) shop I got my Jackson guitar from told me one price when I asked them to order it in... and then tried to slap an extra £150 on that when it came to actually buying it (with cash)! I told them quite bluntly that if they didn't charge me the price they said initially I'd take my business elsewhere. The extra £150 disappeared like magic! The shop near me that has the best service also happens to be the newest... the other two can be okay but one kinda looks down on metalheads and the other will always try to sell you the most expensive thing rather than the thing you actually need.
12. As someone who's moved from guitar to bass I would disagree that bass is that much easier than guitar. However, it does feel more 'natural' to me if that makes sense. Especially fingerstyle playing.
13. Pfft. Real men play doom.
14. Yeah, even with my limited knowledge I can tell the nut is a bit pants and have already ordered a new one. I take it adding a nut shim is as simple as gluing a bit of material between the nut and the neck... what would be the best material for that? And yes, thicker strings are on the shopping list... it sounds okay with the stock string (fretbuzz aside) but the strings feel very loose.
15. Yeah, a pro setup is a good plan, thanks. Can't shim the neck though, it's set in.
16. Righto, I've got myself an RV4 (blue!)... it's a really nice bass, but the bridge saddles are set ludicrously high especially on the E string. The thing is even with the high saddles the action is about what, in my limited experience, I would consider "normal" (i.e. not too low, not too high). To further compound the issue I've tuned down to C-standard (doom!) which means I'm getting a lot of fret buzz, but I'm reluctant to set the saddles any higher in case something falls off! Anyone with experience of the RV4 (or MM-style bridges for that matter) able to offer any advice on how to deal with this? I'm not above simply getting a new bridge if needs be.
17. Just bought the cab ov Elvis off Nick. Nice guy, had a good chat about bass and stuff before handing over the money.
18. Quite low... I play the bass all wrong and a lower strap makes it more comfortable.
19. My favourite six-string is made of plywood. I replaced the crappy stock pickups with decent ones and it sounds fantastic. I bought another plywood LP copy off eBay recently and that also sounds great, even with the stock electronics still in. Just goes to show that 'tonewood' ain't as important as people think.
20. Ah, eBay... the place where people will buy anything at any price as long as it says RARE and/or VINTAGE.
