1.
It's really a good combo I think. With my Legacy I get a superb rock-tone and with the Sonus it lends itself really good for funk, especially with the bridge pick-up soloed!
Zon + Ashdown = Good Turn up the tube pre-amp and dial in a little sub and away we go
 2.
I have this incoming. I shall take a full family photo he arrives!
Hey those are my pics ©©©!!!!! That's my rig and my kitchen floor!! Where's me lawyer?
 3.
You didn't really want it. What really gives the secret uber tone for double basses is an EMG P pick-up.
How does that work on a double bass then???
 4.
Full circle gone.
Damn
 5.
oh yeah... check out his youtube clip
Interesting bass I checked that out a few days ago - pretty beaten up but sounded pretty good I thought his video was cool, but there's another one further down which is a more conventional recording on myspace
 6.
Woo we have matching rays!
Good taste - it's a classic I love the maple neck, quite different to the rosewood on my Ray 5HH
 7. A note of thanks to Greg who gave me a taster lesson on his DB this evening - top bloke and very much appreciated, cheers Greg! Now I need something to play on... Haven't progressed the workshop idea though - are folks still up for it?
 8.
I love the Sonus... must do as I'm onto my 3rd!
Zons are Good
 9. Well, here's what I have and when I bought them: 1976 Gibson EB-4L 2000 Stingray 4H 2005 Zon Sonus Special 5 fretless 2006 Stingray 5HH 2009 Bongo 4H I've never sold a bass I've bought - although my purchasing rate has increased rapidly since I turned 40 so I may come under pressure from SWMBO soon...
 10. I'm no professional but FWIW I think Vintage are very good, and astonishingly good value for money. I played a VP940FL in Reverb Bristol just for a laugh but was surprised how nice it was: Vintage VP940FL fretless I was so impressed that when the son of a friend of mine came seeking advice for a new bass under £250 I sent him straight in there. He bought the fretted version: Vintage VP940B fretted I played it when he brought it round and it was great. I later found out his teacher was so impressed he borrowed it off him Haven't played any of the others but the VP940's I have no hesitation in recommending.
 11. I have a Zon Sonus Special 5 fretless and that is a 35" scale. Sounds fine to me, I have to stretch a tad more playing close to the nut. My other 5er is a Stingray, 34" and sounds fine. Sterling ball is adamant about 34" and I think he's got it right on his instruments. I don't think it's an argument about 34" vs 35" for the B, I think it's about finding a manufacturer who knows what they are doing.
 12. Best 6 string I've played is the Musicman Bongo, I loved it. Didn't have any problems reaching the B and it was well balanced. It's on the list, I'll get one one day. Doubt if I'd use a 6er as my one-and-only bass as it's a different animal to a 5er, but a very interesting addition to your collection if you have the wherewithal.
 13. Hi, I had to laugh I'm right next door at Brent Knoll Thanks for the pointers I'll go have a google. It's been interesting talking to Greg because he's an EB player that's moved to DB so he's been through the pain I'm expecting to (he's a lot younger than me though LOL). After playing EB for 30 odd years there's a certain confidence and comfort that gets built up with it and I'm stealing myself for starting right back down at the bottom again, oh well Incoming PM... Cheers Neil
 14. Hi PedalB thanks for your post. I do, however, think that most of us EB'ers understand this which is why at the moment so many of us in Bristol are looking for a good teacher to teach us technique! I for one am under no illusion about how different (and difficult) it's going to be but that's no reason not to have a go. At my age I am realistic enough to know I am unlikely to attain the level of a top notch jazz bassist or a classical player but will be happy if I can achieve a decent level of competence so that I can entertain myself and hopefully others in some modest way. Cheers Neil
 15.
Just seen this post. I'm playing at the Old Duke tonight (22nd). Happy to have a chat with any BCer re Double Bass thingies.
Damn! I work at the other end of King Street a minute away but have to get home early tonight! Grr! When will you be there (or somewhere close) again? Neil
 16. Been too busy Zac, other life stuff going on, besides, it's bad for my bank balance I found my way here because I'm thinking of learning double bass and there's lots of helpful stuff here about that. PM me, let me know what you're up to
 17. Cool - so me, xzodar, bassbod, the Rev, Stu-khag Leave it with me. If anyone else is interested then post and let us know Neil
 18. Hey Guys, I've been in contact with Greg Cordez and plan to set up a taster lesson or two. However I also floated the idea of a sort of mini-workshop for DB wannabes - don't know yet if he wants to take it on or not. I'm also going to pop in to Cremona and see if they're interested in doing something, maybe hosting an open evening or something I dunno. Who's up for this? Have we got 3 or 4 so far? Me, xzodar, bassbod, the Rev? Anyone else? Neil
 19. Yep, tis I, howdy
are you on the EBMM forum? think i recognise the avatar/name? you may know me as "the unrepentant"
20. Ahem, here's my opportunity to spin some long pseudo-technical yarn about tone and human audio perception and how it's better to have the low notes higher up and ignite a whole new debate... Actually I use the 15 on it's own for practices so I just parked it on top of the 4x10 in between Playing live with both cabs the 15 is on the bottom, I can hear the bass better out of the 410s like that. Usually just use the 15 for most gigs, it's plenty big enough and the Stingray/Bongo's have plenty of grind so it doesn't sound wooly. I did buy a folding trolley recently so maybe I could manage the 410 instead now Yes, the 15 is lighter than the 410, yes I'm getting older, yes I'd like a new set of neo cabs...
Just wondering why you have the 15 above the 4X10? Nice MM
21. Hi, thanks, I manage to acquire 1 bass/decade: there's also a Stingray 5HH and a very old Gibson EB-4L which was my first bass bought as a teenager, crap to play and don't use it now but can't bear to sell it. The Zon is lovely, bought it secondhand when I did a stint in the US, paid about 1/3 what it would cost here - the Americans only seem to like new stuff so used is often very good value.
Hi there, lovely stuff, nice Zon too.
22. Newbie here, some rig shots, different basses, same trusty Ashdown powering them all: Pink instrument cables have better bass response, as we all know...
 23. Ah, I just joined, couldn't find any Zon porn and was about to start a thread. OK, here's mine: It's a Zon Sonus 5 Special fretless Fabulous bass, picked it up secondhand for a ridiculous price when I lived in the States. I've posted some Musicman porn on the Musicman thread if anyone's interested.
 24. Hey Duarte, how you doing? Remember me? Remember these? Just joined here, so signing on in the usual manner GD
 25. Ah, we're all crawling out of the woodwork now That's a really nice idea - would be an ideal opportunity for, say, a teacher to tout for business too Or a retailer? I wonder...
Actually, how about a DB Workshop where a group of wannabe DB players could turn up. (I'm another who is thinking of taking the plunge and based in Bristol) :-) Just askin...
