Thanks for the link. I'm guessing they may be for Fender Jazz basses, but Squier Jazzes have a slightly different layout.

Does anyone know of an on-line outlet that stocks replacement or alternative bits for Squier basses? I'm looking for a black/white/black scratchplate for my Standard Jazz, but it seems Fender versions don't fit. Various places seem to do Fender-style plates, but Squire plates seem to have the hole for the pup slightly more towards the bridge end of the bass.

Well, it shouldn't be too hard stripping off the paint, and getting new covers for the pups. The tricky part will be getting a respray for the body. 'Tricky' as in 'probably pricey'. Mind you, there may be some nice looking grain underneath...

Go for it. I got a Squier Standard Jazz today and have only just put the bloody thing down. Far too nice. I imagine the one you're after will also be very nice indeed! I have to say I'm completely sold on Jazz basses now.

I tried one back in the late-ish '80s and really liked it. Just didn't have the money at the time to buy one!

The small amount of Tung oil I had on my fretless' fretboard seemed to do the trick.

Heh - it's a shame the whole scene went to hell, got watered down into other things/rip-offs, turned nasty, etc.. Seems to have been widely copied in various ways then and after - especially in the metal/thrash scene. That said, trying to track down some of the good stuff is tricky as hell. I'm still after the version of Attitude's 'Homeless Crew' that was (I think) on one of their EPs. Started off with the singer trying to do 'America The Beautiful' and having a coughing fit before launching into one of their best songs (and the best version of it).

Cheers You might to check out the various 'acronym' bands of the time too: SNFU, RKL, early DRI (before they became a Crossover band). Another good band was Spermbirds. Also, you could go back a little earlier to when the US hardcore punk scene really kicked off - you can see the excellent 'American Hardcore' documentary [url="http://tinyurl.com/y87ssgu"]here...[/url] - that also kicks off with the always excellent 'Pay To Cum' by Bad Brains

It might also be worthwhile familiarising yourself with older (mid to late '80s) US hardcore punk bands, such a Dag Nasty, Rites of Spring, and a fair few others from the Dischord label. And perhaps bands from the same era such as Attitude, The Stupids, and Final Conflict. NoFX and others seem to be descended from that sort of stuff, albeit with a slightly more poppy tempo.

Wizard will make pups to spec, if you describe what you're after.

Sometimes a bit of splashing about with the cash can have it's up side. I decided to treat myself a bit and replace bits on my Fender Jazz fretless, as it's 20 years old and was pretty beaten up by the previous owner. It's black with a nicely yellowed neck, but the white pickguard was a mess and the screws holding it in place were all dull and tarnished. So I put on a new pickguard - a black one - and replaced all the screws with shiny new ones. Now it looks sexy as hell Not that this broke the bank, but sometimes spending a bit on the little things makes a lot of difference to the aesthetics!

I have 'Grand Guignol' by Naked City. Not sure if I've ever really taken to it, but it's way better than the stuff in that clip

Back in 1988 when I was learning to play, this [url="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MqLSSdoW2Zc"]Dag Nasty[/url] song was a trial and then a pleasure once I got the hang of it. Still really enjoy playing it now too! I think is when I finally got the hang of playing bass.
