This: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=78800 or this: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=79721 and this: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=79940 or this http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=79653 Should do your job.
You are absolutely right I have looked at both - the frustrating thing is I can't organise the logistics of picking either of the cabs up! (a combination of distance and size). Picking up the heads is not an issue.
2. I posted last week end to get some advice regarding whether to go with 2x10 or 1x15. I had some great feedback, the consensus being try 2x12. Notwithstanding the Eden 212 in the for sale thread which, to my great disappointment, the logistics of collection are too challenging I think 2x12 is out of my price range. I have thrashed about in the for sale thread, ebay, gumtree etc. over the last 2 months looking at any and all options open to me but I think a more focused approach may yield better results, so once again I am asking for advice. . My preferred budget is £500 (if 2x12 I might be able to go to £600 but am not optimistic this is realistic) - second hand . We play small gigs, pubs, rooms with up to 200 people (if we are lucky) . Our drummer is loud! . The solution must be portable, thus 4x10 is a definite no - so either a combo or small cab & head . Music is mainstream rock or rock/pop with some Gary Moore blues, Brian Adams, Santana thrown in (depending on the audience) If I can get any recommendations that might end my frustrating search I will be so grateful. Thanks in anticipation, Peter
3. Taking the feedback on board then, it looks like 2x12 is the way to go. However browsing around, 2x12 isn't anywhere near as common as 2x10 ..... SO ... the next question is any recommendations what I should be looking at. I want around 300w. If it is going to be a challenge I would be OK with a separate amp into a 2x12 cab. Doesn't look likely I can get anything 2nd hand for this within my collection area so may need to look at new. Thanks again
4.
I guess it very much depends on what sound you are trying to achieve and style/genre of music that you are playing. Do you need an all rounder that would be comfortable in any situation. Give us a few more details. All the best Gary
I like to hear my my G&L L2000 growl and punch out the sound which fits the sort of music we are playing at the moment so that is what I am trying to achieve. That said in the future I also want to get another bass for jazz which may mean a second combo. I also take on board the comments about weight & portability so I guess it is down to 1 or 2. Thanks for the replies to date.
5. This may have been asked before and I apologise if I am dragging something up that searching threads may answer! I am looking for a combo and have a basic question ... should I go for 1, 2 or 4 speakers. Are there relative merits to each of these? Any guidance from more experienced players would be most appreciated. If I get an answer that relates I can then narrow down the search. (A second question is why does nothing come up in amps & cabs marketplace in the East Midlands ... but that is just frustration on my part!)
6.
would it be too predictable for me to say Sadowsky??? Thought so..... I'll get my coat
Arrggggghhh! I knew this would be ananswer .... may have to start serious saving. Problem though is being able to try before I buy as per previous recommendations .... how do I get to experience all these wonderful options so I get to know what is right for me?
7. I am the proud owner of a USA G&L L2000 which I bought in from the US a year ago (via Talkbass forum). It was great value and I love the bass, however I am getting a GAS attack and the L2000 looks lonely on its own so something else to hang next to it is the solution. With a forthcoming visit over to the States soon (I have family over there), I am thinking of once again using the Talkbass extensive source of good value pre-loved bass guitars so I will start looking soon. My challenge is what to look at. I love the characteristics of the L2000 - it can really growl and thump. My new bass needs to have different characteristics .. something sharper, more precise and laid back (and be a looker). I don't have vast experience so would appreciate a bit of advice what to start considering that addresses my aspirations, so I am hoping the knowledge of my fellow Basschatters can be of assistance here - any suggestions and advice will be most welcome. Peter (BTW - not looking to buy at the moment so no offers thanks)
8. Sold subject to payment (thanks Nik for setting this up for me)
9.
Hi, a friend of mine is after a bass for her son for Xmas and this would fit the bill perfectly. PM about to be sent. Nik
Thanks .... PM back to you with details
10. For sale is my Ibanez BTB200, price £90 plus carriage at cost (to be determined and agreed based on location but should be no more than £12, possibly less as I use a very reasonable carrier) - I live between Nottingham and Derby and would be happy to meet within a reasonable distance to deliver. This has been my practice guitar for three years and has never been gigged. The bass is in dark pewter, almost black. It has no knocks or dings. These guitars have a reputation for a high action but this one has been brilliantly set up by a noted Nottingham based technician. The twin pick-ups are DX-4’s at the neck and bridge combined with a PHAT II EQ control and Master Volume plus Balance knobs. You should note that there are some Ibanez fakes around but this has been verified as genuine by Headstock (UK Distributors) as a genuine serial number and I have the email specifying this. Picture is about the best I can get from my digital camera (the sale of this Bass will hopefully fund the purchase of a better one!). However if you want specific shots, PM me and I will do my best - same channel for any questions Although my post score is low, I am a regular lurker around this forum. I have some feedback on Talkbass following a purchase from the USA earlier this year which I can link you to. Peter
11. I am so proud of my new USA L2K that I would like to share her with you all. I bought her from a guy on Talkbass in the US in March with delivery to a close friend who lives on the East Coast. We were due to visit soon after but illness prevented my trip. My friend brought it back with him on a visit to the UK last week .... what is more ... he was not stopped and so no duty ... which equals even better VFM! What a great bass.
12. I think you have alerted everyone to a potential bargain here! (not me). Good luck with your bidding.
13.
I flew back direct from Phoenix Skyharbor, Arizona to London Heathrow with BA, and they were absolutely terrific. Going through customs Stateside, I attracted only amused glances and a few questions from staff, including an "Oh, I love Paul McCartney" ! When I got on the place, the staff ushered me to First Class (I was obviously travelling cattle class!) and put the bass (in a hard case) in the coat cupboard. 9 hours later as I exited it was waiting for me by the door. Fantastic, easy service from BA, despite the idiots on the phone not having a clue what to suggest to me before I went to the airport. Good luck!
Interesting ... my original plan was to go to Phoenix as my Daughter lives there. Generally I have found airline staff more accomodatingthere than Philadelphia whic is where I am coming from this time. Oh well ... I must learn a few Beatles songs then and hope forthe best, but this is encouraging.
14.
If you pack the bass right in the case, it should be reasonably safe. What I tend to do is pack a lot of clothing around the bass to stop it from moving in the case - underwear, socks and t-shirts work perfectly, as you can pack the bass in very tight. And make sure the neck is well supported. On top of this, if your friend in the US can find a cardboad packing box to put the case into, that's even better. Finally, when you check the bass in, get it put into oversize packages, don't let it go on the luggage belt with all the other luggage.
Really good advice thanks. The bass was delievered in a cardboard case with additional packaging so I will use that. Only slight issue is that US Immigration tend to open up cases to check contents - especially those with any electrical type stuff in them. Shouldn't be a problem though. Everyone has been really helpful ... so glad I posted the question.
15.
I don't if this helps, but using BA to and from Austria I had to put it in hold. Even with my guitarist's guitar, they insisted we put it in the hold when flying back from Austria, even though we told them what we saw on the website. Just use a Hiscox case mate and it should be fine.
That's what I thought ... it has the original hard shell case so should be OK
16. Anyone out there had any recent experience of bringing a Bass back into the UK from the USA on a BA flight? I called BA Customer Relations and the responder referred me to their website that states: Hand baggage You may take a musical instrument on board as hand baggage as long as the item is guitar sized or smaller. When travelling from or via the UK, a musical instrument is permitted on board as an additional free piece of hand baggage. When travelling into the UK it is considered part of your hand baggage allowance. I asked if a bass guitar qualified ... unfortunately this was one question too far! I read the advice as 'Yes' but, being a glass half full person expect some hassles await me in Philadelphia. BTW bought the Bass - a G&L USA L2000 off TalkBass ... fortunately I have a friend over in Philadelphia - can't wait to get my hands on it and bring it home in March -
17. Just a lovely guitar ... how can you part with it?
18.
If you are hand-carrying something back it is best to have the invoice receipt with you to prove value unless you are going to chance your arm. There are plenty of ideas here about how to try and dodge the duty.
Thanks ... I agree - I am hand carrying back and I will not chance my arm .... it brightens up their day to find someone who does!
19.
There is no difference between new and used. You still have to pay.
OK I accept that but what do they base the charge on ... a Paypal invoice for example?
20. My daughter lives in the US and we are going to visit early March so I was thinking about bringing back a bass with me, taking into account the VAT & duty I think it would be worth it (I travel light BTW). However I am thinking deeper. Looking at the classifieds on Talkbass I guess I will get a better deal with a used bass and am tempted to start making offers, getting it delivered to Phoenix to await my arrival and return. Anyone know where I stand on duty and VAT if I buy a used guitar and bring it back? Thanks in anticipation! Peter
