1. Greetings. I like your taste in music. 41 - I wish I was 41 again!
  2. I've always liked Jeff Berlin's 'Bach' a lot also the fairly obvious 'Country music' by Stu Hamm
  3. can't see any that appeal to me particularly. I hate the danelectro longhorn shape, the vox teardrop and the hohner violin for starters!
  4. Looks cr*p. Why even do something like that when you have such limited woodworking skills? I am certain that it will look even worse 'in the flesh'.
  5. Doh! Just came across this thread. I've been looking into these at the moment and I'm really keen on getting one, but I can't live without a trem. Too bad it's not the trem version ........

    Setlist advice??

Never play without a set list!!
You're not playing a series of numbers. The evening is a whole and everything you do is part of that.
Start all sets with at least 3 strong, up tempo numbers.
In the first set, play the first 3 numbers one after the other with no chat. Say hello after the 3rd number.
If you want to fit in slower numbers, drop the tempo in the middle of the set and then build up to the end of the set.
Always end the first set on a good one.
Don't end a set on an instrumental.
The last set should be designed to build to the last number.
If you are doing an encore you should do at least 2 numbers, even if you have to finish the set a little early to fit them in. The audience will feel that you've "given" them more.
Know what your encore is going to be before you start.
Always use a set list. Never discuss or argue about the set between numbers. That looks very amateurish.
Finnish one number then give a concise, snappy intro to the next, or go straight into the next number. Don't waffle, swear or be rude to the audience, no matter how much they deserve it.
Don't hang around between numbers, you'll let the tempo of the evening drop and you'll loose the audience.
The spaces between the numbers are as important as the numbers themselves.
Don't drink or chat amongst yourselves on stage. It's not a social.

Good answer!
  7. I tend to just get duracell. I try to keep spares at all times and I get them from a big turnover shop, usually Tescos.
  8. In a perfect world I could be tempted by everything except the PRS SE, but sadly lack of funding and lack of space prevail for the forseeable future .........
  9. I think the son was trying to subtly out himself when he asked for something pink with a G string and a seriously impressive bottom end that he could play with in the bedroom.
  10. Techniques, you either beat them or get defeated by them. You need to have tenacity greater than just a desire to be able to do it. I always wanted to sweep pick on a guitar. Not entirely useful other than the odd short moment but I couldn't get within a million miles of it .....
  11. Two very nice guitars, both of which I have been looking into recently! Don't have the fundage unfortunately ...............
  12. If I wanted a 6 string I would HAVE to have that one! Looks a beauty. Side or front LEDs?
  13. Asking for trouble posting something like this here! (I wouldn't) Obviously photoshop due to the harsh cutout edges, I prefer to do a softer edge but maybe that was the effect that he wanted. At the end of the day you could throw up the most amazing picture ever and about half the people here will still be critical of it. As far as genre - dunno, but seeing the pix makes me feel like I'd like to hear the music!
  14. Don't know. But I'm a big fan of the music they play together.
  15. Headless Status S2, blue LEDs _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ UK ONLY _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Status S2 classic 5 string to go. I always wanted a Status, and now I've had one! It never quite felt like 'the one', and now I have a bass that is so it doesn't get a look in any more. It's in pretty good nick, if not necessarily perfect – just one tiny ding (I think!), headless, bolt on neck and with blue front LEDs. In a perfect world I'd probably keep it, but it takes up space and it ties up spare cash right now. The wife says nothing new unless stuff goes so a few things are on the way out of the Golchen household. Note: Strap in pic not included! I live in Luton if anyone wants to see it. I work at London NW9 if that’s more convenient, but it’s a restricted access site so I’d probably have to show it in the car park! Asking price [s]£990[/s] new price £850 Any questions, just send a PM.
  16.
Out of interest, would you be able to play, say, a Ramones song with continual 16th notes by "chucking"? I ask as I would like to play finger-style but the types of music I play seems to preclude it (ie, I feel compelled to use a pick, if only to keep up the pace)
As a one off, I don't see why not. But as a style I'd say no as it would just wear your fingernail off! For many years I played electric guitar without using a plectrum, but with lots of fast alt picking using basically my index fingernail. The nail grew to be perpetually thin and always broke, so I took to sticking a false nail on it, before eventually giving up and using plectrums. I still hate strumming with plecs though!
  17. I've never even tried a plectrum on bass! Am I missing out here? When I want that fast alt picking I just use my index finger + thumb together - I think they call it chucking? Maybe I'll dig out a plec tonight and try it ...........
  18.
Well, for repeating bass lines possibly the best known popular piece is Pachelbel's Canon in D, which you can hear in an outstanding performance below. The first eight notes in the bass repeat throughout the piece - why not play along?
Seen dis?
  19.
The technique is know as ostinato (from an Italian word meaning stubborn).
I guess that's where our word 'Obstinate' comes from?
  20. All I know is I turn mine up high at Christmas.
  21. I'm soooo glad to have all this choice, I spent 8 months of my life fervently tracking down my ideal bass, wading through reviews, scouring eBay, visiting shops, and ended up with ............................... a Fender Jazz.
  22. I have to say that a mac laptop DOES make it easy, as you get free webcam, recording software and movie editing software. I can’t comment on PC’s equivalents as I only have macs myself. I agree that it’s a really good idea to process the sound separately. Poor sound quality is a big turn off for me with YouTube, and I rarely last more than about 20 seconds with crap sound. I record the sound at the same time as I do the video and just splice them together afterwards. Having said that, Youtube compression knackers up the sound quality anyway. It’s also a really good idea to make it worth watching. If you are playing an instrument lets see what your hands are doing! Many on YouTube are crap lighting, appalling positioning of the camera, basically nothing worth actually looking at. If you are going to post on YouTube, be prepared that you might do something brilliant and only two people and a dog will see it. It’s not all that easy getting it viewed! I saw a brilliant guitar video the other day with pathetic viewing figures, it’s a shame when something is so good. Finally, you need tough skin. There are many jerks out there who will write all kinds of crap over your hard work! You can delete bad comments but I mostly leave them in as people are entitled to an opinion! I think that the key is don’t get into a big war with someone.
  23. No idea but it sounds interesting - I'll have to check it out.
  24. Red and Starless & bible black were brilliant! I loved them back in the day, but haven't played them for about 20 years now as I only have vinyl. I was at art college back in the early 80s' and screenprinted a one-off T-shirt of the RED sillhouettes. Red in particular had bite and attack the like of which I've never quite found in other stuff. I also loved Larks tongues in Aspic, never before had I heard such weird music, long tracks going from so quiet as to be almost inaudible to total pandemonium! Marillion script - ahhhh, my favourite band back then. Brilliant lyrics and music, although the production is appalling. I really wish they'd got someone better in. Garden Party isn't cheesy!!!!!! The lyrics alone are too amazing for that label. What a great band, too bad Fish left.
  25. Fender Reggie Hamilton jazz bass. What more could you ask for: Jazz AND precision pups, both active AND passive.
