  1. I played (and still play) a weekly blues jam , so if somebody was doing blues material and needed somebody at the last minute , I’d often get a call simply because I knew so many players. And over the years had been in a lot of varied lineups. These days I try and get a song list in advance and give everything a listen. Sometimes I just have to listen hard and trust the instincts. My odds are pretty good at nailing the groove , but there are times the inevitable is inevitable.
  2. On the originals that were made in Neptune NJ , the tape hid a very unsightly seam around the body. The reissues did not have a seam to hide , just the tradition to continue.
  3. At first the Chinese ones looked the same , but they quickly changed the knob layout and had a toggle switch with two single knobs. And then later returned to the two stack knob approach. For a while the Chinese instruments had a matt finish on the metal parts , especially the pickup covers. The recent Chinese ones had the truss rod cover on the headstock, like the recent Korean ones.
  4. I’ve heard that a hair dryer and a little rubber cement will take care of the tape lift.
  5. I picked up an older PhilJones BigHead for a good price. Great headphone amp with an aux in.

    GK MB500

The fan in my MB200 somehow got gunked up and stopped working. Then came the pink ring of doom. I do know a qualified repair guy and the fan was fixed , but other damage was done , the power module had to be replaced , and some little things got burned up. Today the amp works perfectly. And I’m reassured when I hear a fan kick in.
  7. They’re a nice low tension string , I put them on my SG.

    Me….

Those early Japanese basses are quirky. Some are simply cheap , some are quite surprising. My very first almost bass was a single pickup ZenOn guitar with bass strings on it. I went from that to a Pbass. Still have the Pbass , and wish I still had that ZenOn…

    Me….

I was an old Pbass guy , that got into Rickenbackers , and then got into shortscales. I have around twenty something basses , there’s a couple I could sell , but the rest are all still keepers. I love having basses that are different in feel and tone. I might love the hefty neck on one , and the thin neck on another. I’ve found that if you put the time on an instrument it becomes familiar. And comfortable. Recently I’ve been frequently gigging with a big orange Gretsch medium scale hollow body. Strange days.
  10. Herself made the comment that they looked gorgeous. Danger sign. Our main retailer is Long&McQuade , or L&M. They have them available to order , but not in stock. I waited over six months when the shortscale DC became available , so I’m going to wait until I see one. But if I was to walk into our local , and see one hanging on the wall , I strongly suspect the chances of me walking out with it are pretty good. they do look that good

    Me….

Welcome ! Once upon a time I might have made fun of Gibson basses but today an SG and LPDC Jr are two of my most played basses. You have some beauties there!
  12. I suspect they’re going to sell a boatload of those red ones with the binding. I think I’m safe until I look at a good photo of one …
  13. You might have an early Korean version. Keep the wooden bridge , they sound better , there is a sweet spot for it. If the tuning pegs are stiff , clean them out and give them a dash of lube. They’re great little basses. With rounds they have some serious twang , with older flats they have an authoritative old school thump. With the older ones you have to remove the neck to access the truss rod. They’re incredibly stable , in twenty five years I’ve adjusted mine only twice. But it’s a pain to have to remove the neck to adjust it. Don’t think they’re delicate because of the light weight. They really are tough little buggers. Enjoy! They really are lovely little things.
  14. We do pay a premium for things built in the USA. And it takes some time before they trickle down to the used market. And here in Halifax the nearest dealer is about 1250 km away. A 12 hour drive.
  15. StingRayBoy42 leopard print Converse … I have some sequinned ones!
  16. I got a call from some friends at our music store about something that had just come in , it was going to go for a great price , and was I interested ? I was. But I had gone over four months … edit I had put a bass , two amps and two cabs on kijiji, didn’t sell a thing. Bought a bass instead.
  17. If you can find the LP DC Jr , give it serious consideration. It actually works much like a Pbass with the single pickup in the classic sweet spot. And there’s something to be said for two knob simplicity. They’re still on the website but have not been in production for a while. The SG bass is a nice updated take on the EB3. They’re nice , and there’s lots of them out there.
  18. The Streamliner is still a great amp.
  19. Probably a good move from the sounds of that.
  20. Chicken … so they say. Chicken chow meow …
  21. The Spurs , our little Mexican band , playing in my favourite dive downtown. This was our third night out. I had the big orange Gretsch out.

    Samurai

Just got it home and tweaked the bridge. Action is low , might raise it a hair , it has an older set of rounds on it , I may leave them on , I have Thomastik flats on the yellow one. These are a good looking pair!

    Samurai

It appeared last week on kijiji for a market price , a blue reissue Samurai , the Yamaha SBV500. I have a yellow one , and spent some years looking for it. It’s one of the few long scale basses I regularly play , I think of it as being like a Jazz bass on steroids , but much funkier. And today got a call from some friends that work at our local L&M , the big music retailer in Canada. The blue Samurai had appeared at the store , they were going to move it for a really good price , and was I interested … Now I have a yellow one that I love , but I could not turn down the deal. I’ll pick it up tomorrow. And I’m flattered that they called me before they put it out! Sold!
