Marconiphone valve based reel to reel tape machine.
SPARES/REPAIR free if you can collect from Brighton eves / weekends.
Takes small 'domestic' (7") reels.
makes big hum / noises atm when switched on and I don't have the time to investigate.
'Magic Eye' tube appears to work and pretty good physical condition.
If interested let me know and I can sort a pic.
Would be shame to see it go to the recycling skip if anyone interested.
If no-one takes it, might be worth rescuing the valves? -

Though that later one is a solo rather than a "cut through the band" tone.
Having watched that loads of times, and as a horn player, I like watching his breathing - it fits in with the phrases, just as we have to on our aerophones
Interesting, as John was of course a horn player...
Dennis Bovell reckons that horn players make the best bass players. -
hey i really need some help i want to build my own amp and i am completely stuck. to cut it short i would be really grateful if some one could point me in the direction of a good informative site were i can get to grips with the absolute basics. thank you very much for your time
the funk man
You say 'absolute basics' - does this mean you haven't built electronic gear before? If so then it's a bit over-ambitious to start with an amp. Why not try building some pedals first, build your skills that way then move on to preamps and eventually the whole amp?
If you're a beginner you'll make mistakes. Mistakes involving power amplifiers can be very expensive (and painful/hazardous as previously mentioned).
edit: Sorry if that sounded a bit negative. Have a look here: http://sound.westhost.com/ -
Shame he used his orange Spector on 90% of the stuff he's recorded.
I have seen him with a Thumb 6 though.
D'oh! Once again I fall for the marketing machine. I saw him one time and he was handed a different Thumb for each song, it seemed. I'd never seen a 5 string fretless before. I got close to the sound on Hard Left with the 4 string anyway, so it worked for me.
The I got a Music Man because I liked the sound on Blood Sugar Sex Magic ;-)
You'll be telling me that Lemmy uses an EB0 next.
Edit: I've just ben handed a piece of paper that says Flea used a WAL on BSSM and I should pay more attention. -
Theres nothing wrong with detuning, all of my basses are a full step down, I really don't see myself playing in standard for a very long time and that'll only be when a guitarist gets too emotional over not being able to think for himself, it's a comfort thing as well as tone, I like having my F in the G position for example and I like to fret my low E in stead of an open string, and the tension is just perfect for my right hand as well, and tonewise my basses just sound sonically bigger and warmer than when in standard. I unerstand what you mean 100% about the stereotype of downtuning, it gives it a bad rep but most of the early 90's Hip-Hop/Funk was either recorded a full step down or a half step down, even funk stuff from the 70's and 80's was as well. And those recordings just sound so warm and beefy to my ears.
What gauge strings do you use to get a decent tension? -
Hi all, i have been known to use Fast Fret to add a bit of zing to my strings and make them feel a little smoother and silkier.
Then someone (who's opinion i value) said it eats away at the wood in the neck and doesn't do it any good in the long run.
Does anyone know anything about that? Or does anyone use any product on their strings to add like to them?
I'm sure it's probably been covered before in a topic somewhere but i couldn't find anything about it.
Thanks
I use Fastfret and it hasn't made my neck fall off yet. You're not the only concerned citizen however:
The tonal range of a WAL ... OK, so you need a Stingray sound - just a flic of the electronics and you're there. You need that tin-like, hollow Ricky sound - same. Fender? Wait just gimme a few seconds - there it is. You need a piano-like Ken Smith-sound? no problem. And you have your DI out at hand for recording or in any live mixing-console situation. It just takes some time to become accustomed to the electronic possibilities of this instrument and on a dark stage looking for the right pu-setup can be a problem.
It's the versatility in tone, the perfect playability and the perfect craftsmanship that makes a WAL a WAL in my view.
And they just look and feel great. My MK I fretless 4 string was my first fretless bass ever and I didn't have any problems with intonation at all. I felt at home right away. Some say the WAL necks feel chunky - well try one of those Warwick stems and think again. WAL necks feel like those of normal Jazz-necks to me.
Also, try to get that low action you can achieve on these chunky necks on a Stingray and you will fail. My MK II fiver's low-action playability is perfect from the lowest up to the highest fret. These basses just play like butter.
And they re-sell like Mercedes Benz cars just because they are that good, extremely rare and built with a lot of love to detail.

I'm beginning to regret turning down the WAL fretless I was offered for £150 a few years back. 'I've already got 2 basses, why would I want another?' -
It's a very interesting point John and I tend to believe that over the years, more great music has been created by bands/artists/writers when there is an element of what you call 'the fractious environment of members not quite getting on'
Being a fan of Roxy Music, I was always fascinated by the well-documented 'creative tension' that existed between Bryan Ferry and Brian Eno in their early years. Many fans, me included, would say it helped inspire the band's best work.
There's lots of similar stories about The Beatles along these lines too...

My gold Warmoth has a mahogany body so I never noticed any neck heaviness.
My newest one has a swamp ash body so i took the precaution of getting a set of gotoh resolite machines.
I have a Warmoth dinky P (ie a slimmed-down P) swamp ash with a maple neck and Schaller BML lightweight tuners. The whole thing weighs 3.4kg and has no balance issues.
For comparison, the 79 Fender Precision I released into the wild was 4.5kg and the Mighty Mite/Mex P is 4.2kg. -
The Warmoth necks do seem to have a lot more about their construction, in that they are steel bar reinforced with two way truss rods etc. As a result they're apparently quite heavy, so bear that in mind!
This is true. -
I like the Mighty Mite neck. Seems good quality, and good fit. I would have said its pretty much equivalent quality to a Fender standard neck. I've never used Allparts or Warmouth so can't really compare.
You might want to have a look at a US ebay store called, I think, Stratosphere. I can't post the link as ebay is blocked at work, but he has a huge range of genuine Fender necks at reasonable prices. I've bought a couple of things from him in the past, with no hassle.
Tuners can be a problem, but really only on vintage spec models - I think the current models are all the same size (although do check - I could well be wrong on that!).
I wonder whether it was my mex P body that was odd, rather than the neck. I'll make some measurements if you like.
regarding tuners, I've found that only the position of the screwholes varies between vintage and modern P, to accomodate the various plate shapes. I've never had trouble finding the appropriate pattern to match a neck that's already had the screwholes drilled.
Delberthot posted a series of links to Fender-a-like tuners: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?s=&sho...st&p=332805 -
Very usefull reply Simon, cheers. How did you find your mighty mite? I see allparts and warmouth about too. The warmouth stuff just looked in another league, although I have no experience of any. Are they all US imports? Would my standard Fender tuners fit all three.
cheers.
I had some trouble fitting a Mighty Mite to a mex P; I had to sand the neck pocket slightly to make it fit laterally and then when it was fitted it was so high above the surface of the body that I had to choose between shimming the bridge or routing the neck pocket deeper. I did the latter and it's now a fine instrument (though the resale value is probably a bit knackered).
Warmoth necks are beautiful. I have a maple P neck and it's deeper from fingerboard to back of neck than my Jap Fender P or the Mighty Mite. I haven't tried fitting it in a Fender but it fits the Warmoth body so well that it hardly needs screwing on. Virtually an interference fit.
Yes, standard Fender/Schaller/Gotoh tuners fit all three. I have an unused set of Gotoh, want them? -
Maybe it's me being a bit thick but I clicked on the link for the audio interface and I am a little puzzled as to where the guitar lead plugs in to it ??
It's got phono sockets. An active bass would just about work without a preamp, a passive hardly at all. I've only ever used it with a preamp so it might be me that's being thick by assuming it'd work.
I just edited my post to say 'you WILL need a preamp with this'. -
I am using passive P and J basses, albeit with hot pickups (DiMarzio, SD Quarter-Pounders) so assume this would not be a problem for me. Nevertheless can't see me getting hold of a Trace as none FS on interweb or the Forum.
