1. It's funny you say that as I have always thought of Derek Forbes and JJ to be similar in that way they created a uniquely identifiable playing style. They also had similar energy levels.
 2. Thanks for that. A telling quote indeed.
 3. He stated that he "found himself surplus to requirements". It is hard to believe that the others would sack him given the central role he played to their sound but there you go. The promise of fame and fortune can do strange things to bands. They may have achieved greater fame and fortune after his departure but I think everything they did afterwards was poor and hasn't stood the test of time in the same way as the Derek Forbes era.
 4. Fantastic bass player and I would love to know the truth behind his departure from Simple Minds. I have been listening to him non-stop this past few weeks and have come to appreciate his bass playing skills all over again. I saw him live back in 1982ish and he dominated the stage and sound. He has a blog which is quite amusing and worth a read for some old archive photos. http://derekforbes.blogspot.com/ Cheers John
 5. Glad to see you are up and running again and good luck.
 6. I recorded a version of this years back and pretty much followed the original bass line. It is simpler than it sounds so go on and give it a go.
 7. Great track. I recorded a version of this way back in 1984. I must dig it out and have a listen.
 8. I have always played it slapped. The original sounds like it was slapped to me on a bass with pretty dead strings with that nice hollow tone.
 9.
Cheers john, actually the track is now finished, mixed and mastered, will be for sale on the web next week! It is much tighter and funkier now.... I will post here whn it is released. Peace
Great. Make sure you post details here. I downloaded the earlier version and have been playing it off and on all day. I would love to hear more of the same. It reminds me of some of the great tracks from Groove Collective in a vague way.
 10. Great stuff! I love the playing, the bass tone and the track. I have been listening to loads of music today and this is the best thing I have heard so far.
 11.
glasgow one has its days, the bass dude can be a nice bloke but i know what you mean bout them seeming uninterested.
Seconded. I have always found the bass guy in the Glasgow branch to be very friendly and helpful.
 12. Michael Dempsey played bass on Party Fears Two. Great player who did loads of great work for the Associates. There was a rumour that he faded because he couldn't slap!!! Travesty.
 13.
MB1. You just cant get away from Mark King.........Level 42. Walter Becker...Steely Dan. Chuck Rainey....Steely Dan. Unknown fretless...China Crisis.
China Crisis - The mighty Gazza Johnson - I got drunk with him several times in Scotland. Top bloke and very tasteful fretless player.
 14. Thanks for all the goodwill guys. I can put you all out of your misery now as the bass has just been sold. I hope the new owner enjoys it. Cheers John
 15. I have someone coming over on Saturday to look at it and he seems to have his heart set on it. I promise to keep you posted. Funnily enough, after years of buying moderately high-end basses, I suddenly find myself lusting after a nice Jazz or Precision. It must be something to do with old age.
 16.
What a price!
I got the bass for a pretty reasonable price and I don't want to attempt to profiteer from my fellow bass players. No doubt I could have asked for a bit more if it was right handed as there would have been a larger market for it. It is now provisionally sold and I have someone coming to look it over. Cheers John
 17. Spare a thought for us poor left hookers who have to watch all these wonderful righty basses come up for offer every day. I would love to have a Fender JP signature Jazz but they aren't available left-handed. I can always dream of getting the Fender custom shop to do one for me though. I did once seriously consider relearning to play right handed but life is just too short for that. Cheers John
 18. I am selling this as I haven't really played it much since buying it. I have been retired from playing with bands for over 10 years now and this was a mid-life crisis purchase. I just can't tear myself away from my Wal which I love. I bought it around 18 months ago through a contact I made on the old bulletin board but an impending house move is forcing me to rationalise my kit. Details:

Left Handed Warwick Thumb 6 String
Custom Shop Built 15th February 2005
AAA Flamed Maple top grain
Flamed Maple neck
French Violet Stain
Fretted Ebony Fingerboard
Gold Hardware
MEC 3-Way active HB/HB
Comes with case, straplocks, manual and custom shop certificate of authenticity. I would accept £800. I am based in Glasgow and would prefer collection if possible. You can see higher resolution pics on my flickr site here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/john-robertso...57594149869831/
 19. I just wanted to add that I am the happy owner of an all black 1988 model including headstock. It is a thing of beauty indeed.
