This is my setup.
A Carvin R600 MKII Head
This was bought as a part of a 'RedEye' 2x10" kickback combo. The original owner had blown one of the emminence speakers and had replaced it with a cheaper aftermarket.
The blowout had obviosly done damage to the remaining cone and the horn.
It sounded rough, and I didn't feel it was putting out anywhere near the level it should have been.
I'd fancied a 4x10" anyhow, so rather than fork out for a repair on a cab i didn't really like, i started looking.
The SWR Goliath III is a mega cab, nice and clear. Love the sound.
I'm running at 500w 8 Ohm.
Had to have the Carvins power stage rebuilt about 18 months ago, and ever since it's the best amp for me, even better than previously. The only thing i'd consider replacing it with is a Genz Benz GBE1200. But to be fair, I know where i'm up to with my rig now, and it sounds good for me.
There are also a few of my basses in the background, bit of a crappy mobile photo, but you get the idea. -
Andy - your bass is a Series III mate - as noted, a scaled down version of the Series I shape.
Cheers
Nick
Wow...mines scaled down?
How big are series 1?!
Thanks for the info guys. -
Looking at it 'Open Mic Night' is just an invitation for people who shouldn't be allowed the oppertunity.
-
My answer:
They are weird social gatherings. Examples below.

There are usually really badly run affairs, half arranged by music students who can't find a band.

There are ones where really average players who consider themselves 'Heavyweights' on the 'Scene' intimidate less experienced players who actually turned up with a hope of learning something.

As above, but the 'Heavyweights' are the in house 'Band' and each member of said 'Band' are eventually replaced by talentless show offs, basically ending in a useless spirally affair.

The ones where sensitive singer songwriter acoustic types get up with their 'talented' girlfriend vocalist, with pre prepared songs. The accompanists are inevitably a shredding metal guitarist, a Latin Jazz drummer and a 'Funky' bassist.
So in conclusion, they do not work. They are not what everyone wants them to be.
Some people confuse the term 'Open Mic Night' with 'Jam Night' and basically, it's an oppertunity for a lot of nepotistic nonesense. -

OOOOOOH Pearl Blue...
Interesting.
Think i need to put a wanted sign up! -
I'm happy enough with my band, i do wish we'd work harder 2008 was a fantastic year, really busy, big festival shows, big sell outs locally and plenty of label interest.
Then 2009, it's like i've had no band.
The singer is an actor, so he disappears on theatre jobs all the time.
The guitarist bought a Pub with the singer.
The Drummer has been arranging his wedding.
The Keyboard player is a bit of a free spirtr (read Lazy)
and I've had baby Ella to get used to.
I really don't know what i'd do without the sporadic Rehearsals and Recording sessions.
It'd be nice to finish the year on a high note, and start 2010 with real conviction.
I won't hold my breath. -
I don't weigh my basses.
It's the last thing on my mind when buying a bass. -
pps that isn't my bass amp in the photo!!!
-
Try both, but i LOVE my 50's Classic In White Blonde, my other half Yvonne bought it as a birthday present for me.
I like the Highways, but i think they look rubbish when the finish goes shiny.
I added the pickup and bridge covers, and it looks amazing. -
The Fretless Uberhorn is a winner for me. I'd love that to be sat next to a really nice little amp in my living room on a stand, just to pick up and noodle on.
I hope he brings that or similar to Bass Day UK this year, i think it's about time i started investring in UK luthiers.
Mr Shuker really is a bloody nice bloke, and i'd like to buy at least one bass from him.
That gold Jazz is a nice bit of kit too.
I can see the comparison to ritters, but i think the ritters are a mess in my humble opinion. -
As far as i can figure, series 1 is the same shape as mine, series 2 are narrower and have a scoop between the fingerboard and neck pickup, and series 3 are a smaller version of the series 1...
I'm probably way out, i'm just getting used to it.
Yeah, a bass with an externatl PSU sounds like a complete nightmare.
Still, if it's alright with you i'll be using the greenburst photo as a screansaver - I can see what you mean about changing to the red, should be a classy looking bass!
Johnbobs custom on the first page is ridiculous, I keep staring at it.
I think the electronics on my Roadie IIA are a winner, don't know how many more switches and knobs I could deal with!
These really are fantastic basses, and i've got rough sketches already drawn up for my custom - I've had a few interesting ideas for headstock facings etc.
I just need to figure out what to sell to fund it...haha. -
I'm not as bad as i used to be.
I just buy stuff now, i don't sell it anymore.
Everything i have does a bit of a different job.
I work in a Guitar Shop, so i'm constantly on temptation...
Look at it this way, a few of my mates pay £100s if not £1000s following football teams, a few spend £1000s on Snowboarding, and some buy expensive road bikes.
If you enjoy the gear, then buy it. -
Er...Yeah, hahah, pretty much that bass!
Maybe a bit more Blue than the green. And i was thinking a Tight Flame, rather than a quilt, kind of like a like a Gibson Les Paul.
That really is a nice thing. I would love the 'Classic' Red, but something like that really has it's own style.
Probably a smart idea to refinish to your current tastes rather than join the back of the queue for another one.
Just out of intererst, i see a couple of extra mini toggles, one for L.E.D.s on/off i'd assume, what to they all do? -
Manchester Evening News described us as '70's style suits'
The singer and guitarist usually wear full pinstripe suits, waistcoats etc, Andy the Drummer usually wearst a Trilby, Shirt and Tie, I Uusally do Suit Pants, Shirt and Tie, and the keys player wears whatever she has - we have had her wear a dress from time to time.
We made a huge effort to be uniformly ununiform. I think we're going to stop soon though. -
Haha, but you have the Mark King one, it'll be a few years before i get my mits on one of them - Does anyone ever sell them?!?!?
I wish the previous owner hadn't put a thumbrest between the two pickups - In the shop there was a Union Jack Sticker over the 2 screw holes.
Also, someone has done a few shoddy patches of DIY refin around the edge.
I am going to e-mail John Diggins and see What he can do about a partial refin.
Thing is it plays and sounds fantastic, and i may well just leave it as it is.
If i order one, it will be a Mark King Supernatural, But i'd probably get a Flame Maple Cap on each 'wing' and have a nice aqua burst or something.I want the Mark King connection, with its own twist, I'll see, if i think i can get rid of a couple of basses first. I'll keep that one pristine and use the roadie as my workhorse Jaydee.
I'm not the biggest fan of the Status Kingbass 1 or 2, and I don't want to remortgage to buy an Alembic. Plus, i'm so impressed with the help Andy at Jaydee gave me, i doubt i'd even go anywhere else. -
Just order one...Mine is the only bass i'd take anywhere.
Also, you won't bump into too many people with one, so it's always a talking point.
For my bands last EP I did at least 1 take per track with my Bongo.
I got mine for my 21st. -
Nice, i do remember their PBass copy having a remarkably close logo. Bit naughty really.
Thanks for the info. -
Spotted it in Johnny Roadhouse Manchester.
I think next time i'll go for a custom order, A Mark King Classic with the Saturn Inlays, possibly with fancier woods.
The Custom order Supernatural on the 1st page is awesome. -
Hofner Contemporary, or the Epiphone. Both Fantastic Value.
I picked up my German Made Hofner 'Cavern' for similar money, so i'm a smug twat. -
Yeah, Vester, what happened to that brand?
Cant believe the Vigier thing, hahaha. WARWICK THUMB...oh the EXCESS? yup, just the same. -
It's the same question as..."why drive a Mercedes, when you can drive a Lada."
It isn't the same journey.
I used to buy cheap basses, and sell cheap basses to get to the next cheap bass.
Eventually (2000 - Warwick Corvette) meant i had stopped buying cheap, sh*tty basses.
If you work full time, and earn your keep, treat yourself. If you're a decent player, and you go gigging, why not have a nice bass or two.
A more relevant question would be..why wear a Rolex when a Timex tells the exact same time, or why use a Mont Blanc when a Bic works just fine?
If you aren't a pro, then you're a hobbyist, if you have the spare money or if you don't, get what you want.
Spend whatever you want on gear, if you can justify it. If not, then just enjoy your apparently amazing Westfield.
PS. I did a set up on a mates JB1000 Westfield Jazz Bass Copy and it was a FANTASTIC £130 bass.
PPS. I do not own a Merc. -
Just as a bit of proof, here are a few pics.
The previous owner did a few messy patch ups on the paint and added/removed a thumbrest. It plays amazingly well though. -
I fancy the fretless version.
They are on the Thomann site at £550.79 for fretted and £590.20 for fretless.

Not in stock yet however.
Doubt they will be much dearer, if not cheaper with UK dealers, and if we/they have ordered quickly enough, they should be in stores in the UK sooner. Although with Epiphone don't expect too much accuracy with Delivery times. Be patient and every Tom, Dick and Harry will have them. If you buy from Germany and it arrives f***ed, or you decide you don't like it, you'll have to ship it back at your cost (initially), if you try it in a shop near you, you'll enjoy the experience a whole lot more. If it's £25 difference, it's £25 well spent.
And which makes them £100 more than a Jack Casady - by which I could also be tempted.
One of the best basses I own, they don't sound acoustic enough though, to not make this new bass interesting, haha. I'm waiting. -
I think if fender just added blocks and binding to there modern standard jazz and moved the rear pickup to the 70s configuration they would make a killing.
I agree, But some people just don't get it.
After all Black/Rosewood is still the staple of Mexi Jazz Bass Sales, or Arctic White. People are boring.
If they did the new Lake Placid Blue, Maple Neck with White Blocks and Binding, i'd buy 3. Just for the sake of it.
