ngombe and Mikey D for bringing the elegant Phil Jones suitcase and extension, that outrageous 7 string, and providing some of the most musical moments of the afternoon.
Thank you and it was my pleasure. Just want to say thank you again for hosting, it was a wonderful day. Next time, the ampitheatre!
Me playing umm.. playing something A Yamaha six, (apologies some names i've forgotten)
The yamaha is a 6, the hybrid thingy is a wes lambe custom 8 If you want to know more or need to describe it to people Visit His Website That's me playing by the way! Great meeting everyone and trying out their equipment. Everything sounded great and was i surprised by many a thing...when's that fretless going on sale!?
  2. With a more modern sound... Who's the best? Why? What do you think? What should I be looking to try? I'm looking and am personally being swayed towards something with the nordstrand J's and Audure preamp combo going by what a lot of people are saying, but i obviously want to hear this myself... A couple of options: Nordstrand Fender? Crazy idea I know... Pavel Basses Lakeland Sadowsky Or just buy the Nords and Audere and whack them in a jazz I like the feel of.
  3. I have an old Legend bass (very cheap) that I converted to fretless and have been considering getting one of these and whacking in some new pickups also, probably some nordstrands. A lot cheaper than buying a new bass with them in, but they would probably be worth twice the actual value of the bass!! I look forward to actually hearing one of these soon.

I just had a thought...I didn't even consider effects units!! I have a Hughes and Kettner Rotosphere, a Pigtronix Envelope Phaser (EP-1) and an electro-harmonix Bass microsynth I can bring if anyone is interested in any of them!?

The warwick would be nice to try! Or even the trb2 to compare to my original trb.
  6. He's playing the 30th of June in Birmingham, in Digbeth somewhere I think.
  7. I started studying jazz last september. I had never touched an upright until then, but am expected to become as proficient on it as everyone else is on their 'first' instrument!! Still looking for my own to play though.
  8. buckeye roscoe 6.......I need to get some money fast!
  9. Either unplugged or through my guitar rig 2 and control pedal plugged into my Apple Powerbook.
  10. I've been to two of his gigs now in Birmingham and both have been excellent. The whole band are mother [push in the truck]ers...neil charles on bass, Femi the guitarist is the happiest man in the world and troy the drummer plays some amazing [Top Ten hit].
  11. And if you think you are owed any money because a recording you played on has been aired etc: Search for your name and register... It's amazing who hadn't/hasn't received their royalties.
  12. Check out the PPL who pay out performance royalties for more info. If you play on a track that is aired you are entitled to a cut (even though in most cases it will be very very minimal) PPL Also have a read of this for an explanation of royalties and how they are paid and when etc: How it works

  15.
Hey man...it was in a village between MK and Buckingham...check out: www.indigojazz.co.uk there's info on there about the jam...also, at Black Cats in Northampton, every Tuesday there's supposed to be a wicked jazz jam!!!
Cheers, I'll have to check them out when I am about MK.
  16.
I went to a jazz jam last Weds, just to check it out and see what's what...ended up being the house bassist for the night, taking solos, doing it all...not very well mind Loved it though!!! That was near Milton Keynes, so about 90mins from me!!!
I actually am from Mk, but based in Brum...where was the Jam? Is it a regular thing?
  17. I use them on my Yamaha TRB 6, no problems at all and the best sounding strings I have ever had. Been on there for about 6 months and absolutely no wear on the coating. I don't think I will use anything else form now on.
  18.
Is it specifically an DB you want or will an EUB be ok?
Has to be DB.
Erm without stating the obvious: Why the heck are you looking in the US for a double bass? Importing in that direction is like trying to sell cheap basses to China, it flows the other way! These things are very labour intensive to make and heavy, so anything made there and imported will be very expensive. Eastern Europe is the place to get a bass made that will be high quality but low cost, and you might not even have to pay VAT if it's in one of the newly joined countries. From what I understand many of the Czech luthiers have been making orchestral intruments in their families for centuries! Anyway for UK dealer, when I looked around at double basses a year ago, this place was really helpful and they clearly knew what they were talking about: http://www.contrabass.co.uk I'd try them first. Other than that I would particulary like one of these for £1500 on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/An-Amazing-Deluxe-Fl...oQQcmdZViewItem
Yeah I have an email I am about to send to all the UK shops. Just tried a chinese import to germany, a Gewa, was alright, nothing special (I loved the dark finish though). Just over £1100 for that. Then tried two carved chinese £2500 basses, one hardly used, the other more so...completely different ball park of sound and projection etc. I am tempted to save that extra bit and wait for a better quality bass. The reason i am looking at shipping from America is because everyone I have talked to have said that nothing compares to the uptons in the £1000-£2000 price range, but I am looking at alternatives over here. Ideally not the stentors, zellers etc. Because I haven't played one yet that i like. But then again I haven't tried their Elysia range. Yet. Can anybody recommend a few european suppliers then? Because I would love not to pay the 20% duty!
  19. I have been looking for a long time now for an inexpensive double bass to go through the rest of uni with me. I have just completed my first year studying jazz at a conservatoire in the UK and have had enough of playing the shoddy basses we have here. I want my own. I need a good value, good quality upright for about £1500. Funds are extremely tight being a student, also time is a slight factor as the more I have to play these poor basses the more I actually get put off playing. The two I am most interested in are the Uptons, going by all the comments, however, I would be unable to try them. I also really like the actual look and finish of these instruments compared to almost all other basses i have seen. I have emailed upton and they have been very helpful regarding shipping to the UK etc. The costs would be: Upton Laminate $1900 @ +$450 s/h = £1180 +20% tax and duty = @ £1415 Upton Hybrid $2900 @ +$450 s/h = £1680 +20% tax and duty = @ £2015 Currently I am being swayed towards the Laminate, but is the hybrid worth the extra £600 it would cost? Alternatively, are there any serious options in the UK? Because £1415 is quite a bit for a laminate, but not if it is that much better in quality than say the stentors etc. I need to decide soon as I would like the bass before starting next september and there are obviously build times to consider. Comments?

For years before I played bas or listened to music I used to put my uncles graceland cd on everytime i visited him and would listen to the bass parts.
Hi - I'm new to basschat (/talk /world) and I'd love to come along if that's ok. I can make June 16th, and I can offer a lift from south birmingham (I can even pick up from new street station - it's not that far from me). cheers Joe
If you could offer a lift for a bit of petrol money that would be great. I should be free this day. And if someone would be kind enough to get me from central birmingham I can bring my Phil jones suitcase with extension speaker (spce permitting) and my wes lambe custom 8 string guitar/bass ala charlie hunter. Yes I know it is mean tot be just basses...
